    The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors met for its monthly meeting on Tuesday in the Middle School Commons. In personnel matters, George Garcia was hired as a bus driver. Regan Wirkkala and Lamar Wirkkala were hired as part-time groundskeepers. Nicole Burkhalter was hired as middle school volleyball coach and Kirsten Scrabeck as C-squad volleyball coach.   • County to hire for community center

    The Wahkiakum Community Center should soon re-open under direction of a new manager. The center, located in the first floor of the Cathlamet library building, has been closed since the end of July when funding ended for its Americorps manager. Some programs in existence at that time have continued under direction of volunteers, but the center has been closed. Volunteers have pressed both the Town of Cathlamet, which owns the center building, and Wahkiakum County, which has contracted with the town to operate the center, to get the center open...

  • Fact finding continues for waterfront park

    Several community leaders met last week with representatives from the National Park Service on September 14 to continue planning a potential park on the site of the former sewage lagoons in Cathlamet.     By Rick Nelson Commissioners of Port District 2 on Tuesday agreed to purchase an espresso stand and construct a new building housing the port office and a laundromat at Skamokawa Vista Park. Sisters Rachel Katyryniuk and Nicole Burkhalter set up a mobile espresso stand in the park last year, and they've offered to sell it to the port district this year.     In the near future, boxes filled with love will leave Wahkiakum County and head north to Seattle. The boxes have been making this trip every year since 1959, when the Puget Island Auxiliary was formed. The women's group makes quilts and other items for children who go to the Seattle Children's Hospital for care.     Last Thursday, commissioners at the Wahkiakum County Port District 1 meeting discussed the preliminary budget and possible rate hikes for 2017, talked about dredge issues, and approved the sale of an abandoned boat. Commissioners looked over the preliminary budget for 2017. According to the proposed budget, the port is expected to bring in $1,114,137 in revenue and spend $737,125.     Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized the county engineer to apply for funds for road improvement projects in Eden Valley, on Puget Island and at Skamokawa. Commissioners authorized County Engineer Paul Lacy to apply for grant funding for the road improvement projects. The bulk of the funding would come from the state County Road Administration Board.     It was busy on Saturday at the Elochoman Slough Marina. Around noon, the Coast Guard put on a performance for spectators, including the owners of a boat that ran aground on a sand bar.     Wahkiakum County commissioners had a quiet meeting Tuesday with a light agenda. With Commissioner Dan Cothren absent and attending a meeting of the state Board of Natural Resources, Commissioners Blair Brady and Mike Backman approved a request from Clerk Kay Holland to purchase a portable storage container.     The Washington State Committee on Geographic Names is looking for opinions on the recent proposal to change the names of Jim Crow Hill, Jim Crow Creek, and Jim Crow Point.     On Tuesday morning, 30 boats went out on the Columbia River in the early morning hours, ferrying 53 participants in the second annual Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby to prime locations for fishing. Only 21 came back with a fish, but everyone seemed to be having a good time. Altogether, they caught 348.5 pounds of fish.     Last Friday, local law enforcement and emergency personnel had an opportunity to practice their training along with other agencies in a full scale mass casualty incident at Wahkiakum High School. Several volunteers arrived early in order to be given life-like wounds by moulage artists. Overall, more than 160 people participated in the event.     Joyce Wilson, the library aide for Wahkiakum School District has done it again. Over her summer break, Wilson applied for and was awarded a Refreshing School Libraries to Engage Students grant from the Washington Secretary of State.     A recount of votes for the Legislative District 19 Position 1 primary election last week confirmed that Teresa Purcell had finished second and will advance to the general election. In the final vote tally, Purcell led JD Rossetti 6,411 to 6,361. The margin was small enough to trigger a recount, and Purcell gained one vote in the recount.
