    A group of Wahkiakum County residents gathered last week to take initial steps to form a county marine resources council. The councils are part of a program sponsored by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to encourage community based stewardship of the coastline and its estuaries. Councils conduct citizen-driven marine science studies and protect and restore marine habitat. They are set to receive funding of $40,000 every two years.     The South Bend Indian football team took advantage of six Wahkiakum Mule turnovers to claim a 35-7 victory in the opening round of Class 2B state football playoffs last Saturday. The hosts kicked off to the Mules and stopped the visitors' drive. South Bend then drove the length of the field in nine plays and went ahead 6-0 .     The Wahkiakum Mule football team defeated the Vancouver Christian Light 41-8 to close out the 2010 regular football season last Friday. The Mules finished the season 5-3 in league play, fourth place, 5-4 overall. The Mules head to South Bend this Saturday for a matchup for the fourth place seed in the state playoffs. Zach Pierce caught a pass from Lars Blix and turned it into a 52-yard scoring play for the Mules at the start of the game. We struggled getting our offense on track so we only rushed for 138 total yards with Hank Ferguson carrying the load,18 carries for 117 yards one touchdown and the extra point run.
