Inslee requires vaccination for most state, health, care workers Gov. Jay Inslee on Aug. 9 issued an emergency proclamation mandating that most state executive branch employees and on-site contractors and volunteers, along with public and private health care and long-term care workers, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 18. Inslee announced the proclamation at a press conference in Seattle. Individuals included in the proclamation's mandate must receive the final dose of their vaccination no later than October 4 so as to be...
DAMPNESS/HEAT--As this new week begins, we are enjoying a mild, dry day after a pretty good soaking on Saturday. Here in West Valley, it was a nice steady mist which lasted most of the day and I was very thankful for that. However, temperatures are on the rise again and it could bring temperatures back up into those dangerous mid-90s or higher range, so I hope everyone has prepared themselves for that. Please keep yourself and all your critters hydrated and remember, the sun is not your friend if you're out in it very long, even with...
SR 4 is a pain. We all agree on that. I know using SR 4 for jobs and appointments is a pain. Trying to keep to a schedule can be brutal, but the DOT has to work on highways within a certain summer time frame. I guess the issue is understanding we're all in the same boat. I take the ferry, drive HWY 30 to the Longview bridge and "cross over the bridge," as the old song says. Let's all be as patient as we can! Photo of the Week: For those new to the area, logging trucks may sometimes be annoying,...
Are invasive species hiding in your trees? State officials ask you to check trees, lights, outdoor equipment and standing water in your yard for harmful bugs as part of National Tree Check Month in August. “August is the ideal time to look for invasive insects and report any species that seem out of place,” said Justin Bush, executive coordinator of the Washington Invasive Species Council. “Trees, lights and standing water such as pools, dog bowls, buckets, birdbaths, etc., near homes are great places to look for insects. Trees provide natural...

STILL DRY--While we have had some morning clouds and it's been cooler in our area, compared to the areas east of us, it's still plenty dry out there, so I can only hope that the forecast for showers at the end of this week, actually materialize. As seen by our tree lined highways, our once very green trees are really looking very burned and while it was just the Cedar trees that looked bad at first, now it's the Fir, Hemlock and Spruce trees as well, so that's really alarming as I don't remember ever seeing them look this way. Needless to say,...
Good morning, readers! May the Saints of Rain bless us in the coming days. My yard is brown and my flowers are thirsty. Thanks to all the great gardeners in the area. As I drive around I appreciate the beautiful yards and gardens. Wolverines: Reports from several sources support the increased sightings of wolverines in the area. These small wild animals are usually up high in the Cascade range, but recently one was seen on the peninsula beach. Two of them have been seen in upper Salmon Creek...
Astoria Sunday Market has announced that they now accept food stamps. Food stamps, often referred to as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer), help to put food on the table for millions of people throughout the United States. They provide low-income households with benefits that they can use like cash at grocery stores and farmers markets. It’s especially exciting for farmer’s markets, for the consumer gets to interact with the farmers and food producers that grew and/or processed the food tha...

"The Whistle Punks" band consists of talented musicians from the Vancouver/Portland area. The band members are Carl Wirkkala on lead...
STILL DRY--While Germany, Belgium and other countries are getting hammered by massive amounts of rain, and even our southern states are getting wet, most of us around our area are staying pretty doggone dry. Some areas got some slight mist, but for the most part, dry is the word for the month and it looks to stay that way until this month is over and even into the next one, so please continue to be vigilant when it comes to fire or anything that could accidently start one. I hope you're able to sufficiently keep yourselves and your animals...
Taking Care: After being sick over the weekend, it's good to be up and moving and back to thinking about what's going on outside the house. News from Bonnie LaDoe made me sad this morning, though. She fell and broke her pelvis and her arm. She'll be at Adventist Health in Portland for quite awhile. She would love to hear from all of us, I'm sure. OK, so let's talk about health. First, because each and every person in our area is just as important as every other person, please get vaccinated if...

Washingtonians will begin to see fewer plastic bags beginning Oct. 1 when the statewide plastic bag ban goes into effect. The bag ban prohibits the distribution of single-use plastic carry-out bags by restaurants, retail, small vendor, and grocery stores. The ban was originally scheduled to begin Jan. 1, 2021, but the limited availability of compliant bags prompted Gov. Jay Inslee to delay it through a proclamation. The proclamation was recently rescinded. “Single-use plastic bags are not easily recyclable, which makes managing them at the e...

LOOKING GOOD--As this week begins, we started out with a very sunny Sunday morning and with temps in the low 80s, it's just what the hay makers wanted to see. The forecast is looking dry with maybe a few days with a bit of cloudiness and temperatures in the low 70s, so that's sounding perfect to me. FIRE DANGER--It's still very important to be wary of anything that could cause a spark which could start a fire. As we have seen, there are thousands of acres in our Pacific NW area that are currently burning out of control and we really don't want...
