DRIPPY START--As this week begins, it's a drippy kind of Sunday, but I'm told we'll have some dry days between now and when you get this paper, so I hope you were able to enjoy them like we all did last week, as those sunny days were certainly uplifting. I have to say though, my biggest surprise came on Monday morning when I woke up to snow; I did not see that coming! Luckily it was all gone by noon but just as I was getting ready to enjoy some blue skies, another big, black cloud came over and dumped some hail on us; what a day! For now, it...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 18, 2021

ACCIDENT: It's a snowy Monday morning in Grays River. Hard to recognize snow in mid-March after a few days of nice weather. Am recovering from an accident in my Kia last Saturday. It was the first time I've been in a serious accident in my 75 years. It was on SR 101 out of Chinook at the Springtown intersection. I expected heavy traffic on a nice Saturday, but I had no idea what that would mean on that road at noon. The intersection would indicate folks will be turning, but there is no slow...

  • Next In Their Footsteps virtual event March 21

    Mar 18, 2021

Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop, has announced the next virtual “In Their Footsteps” free speaker series event. “Pacific Slopes Prologues to Lewis & Clark” by David L. Nicandri will be on www.youtube.com/user/Lewisandclarknhp at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Sunday, March 21. There are many puzzles that students of the Lewis and Clark Expedition continue to ponder. One of particular interest along the lower Columbia is why the story seems strangely anti-climactic. After all, reaching the target of the mission--the Pacific...

  • Meet Our Seniors: Luke Bohn

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 18, 2021

Luke Bohn, pronounced "boon," loves film and hopes to work in the industry one day. Wanting a change of scenery, Luke relocated to the area from Portland when he was 16, after his cousin, Kaden Anderson, who attended school in Wahkiakum, encouraged him to give it a try. "I always wanted to go to school with him, because he was one of my best friends," Luke said. "I had good friends in Portland, but you couldn't always trust them. It just felt like there were better people here, people who would...

  • Meet Our Seniors: William Guitron

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 18, 2021

When William Guitron gets his high school diploma in a few months, it won't recognize the education he has gotten working all these years in the family business. William, who is the third of four brothers, moved to Wahkiakum County with his family from another southwest Washington community about seven years ago. They opened Maria's Place, and over the years, William has gotten a front row seat to all the angles of running a small business, having participated in most aspects of it. He spends...

  • Meet Our Seniors: Eli Moon

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 18, 2021

Eli Moon has missed sharing a classroom with his classmates, but the benefits of the Running Start Program were too good to refuse. "I thought it would be really smart to get my associates degree while in high school," Eli said. "I could get to a job or my bachelor's degree a little sooner and it's a little cheaper. I was also allowed to continue to play sports. It was a win/win situation for me." While he might miss weight lifting and hanging out with his friends, he's added to them, having...

  • Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 11, 2021

MIXED BAG--Saturday was a mix of weather from clouds to sunshine to rain and then repeated over and over, so the walk to the mailbox may have started out dry but by the time you came back up the driveway, it was raining! While not ideal, it sure beats the steady downpours that wind up causing us to flood, so I'll take the "sometimes wet" routine any day! On Sunday, depending on where you were, you may have been in the middle of a huge hail storm, as those in Astoria were sending out some fantastic pictures of the "white" area; it looked like a...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 11, 2021

It's Sunday morning. I am grateful I get to spend time with you since this is the best time for me to write. It's a time to think about what is happening to us as a community and to us as families. I am happy to bring you words of some good changes coming. One change that happened for me was the arrival of a new computer. It's called an "all in one" and I can't begin to describe for you how it changes my life. It has an updated, but still old-fashioned keyboard for one thing, and a big monitor...

    Mar 11, 2021

The Finnish American Folk Festival group in Naselle was given the gift of a building in Naselle. They have succeeded in using it as the Naselle Community Center for over two years. They are entering their third year and because of the pandemic, they are now asking for help to continue upkeep and maintenance costs. The local Congregational Church had been declining in membership over the years and was faced with maintenance costs and no pastor. A small group of remaining members got together and discussed possible options for their beloved...

Submitted by Bill Tawater, VFW Post 5297 On March 2 at the monthly VFW Wahkiakum Post 5297 meeting, eight local businesses were recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for their support in the Buddy Poppy Program. Two businesses, the Cathlamet Market and Cathlamet Mini Mart (formerly Gragg's General Store), have been supporting the local Wahkiakum Post 5297 with in-person booths outside their businesses during Memorial Day and Veterans Day Poppy drives for several years. • Meet our Seniors: Beau Carlson

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 11, 2021

If you are looking for Beau Carlson, you might find him at work. He loves baseball, which he's been playing since he could walk, and the outdoors, but nothing elicited a response like the one I got when I mentioned work. "Oh man," Beau said. "My favorite part of work is the money aspect of it, but I think that's almost everybody's favorite part. You get a good paycheck out of it to buy the things you like. I would say I've been working since I was probably five, even if it wasn't a real job. I...

  • Meet our Seniors: Brody Carlson

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 11, 2021

Brody Carlson is a natural athlete who enjoys whatever sport he happens to be playing at any given time. Right now it happens to be football in March. "It's freezing in this weather," he said, remarking on one of the adjustments high school athletes have made during the pandemic, with shortened seasons starting late in the academic year, and out of order. Brody is the quarterback for the Mule football team. In two weeks he'll be playing shortstop for the baseball team, and in late April, he'll...

  • Meet our Seniors: Bryson Havens

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 11, 2021

School just isn't Bryson Haven's thing. Don't ask him for his favorite teacher; he has no answer for his favorite subject. But that's okay. This young man already knows the value in a day of hard work, and is ready for more. "I'm just [at Wahkiakum High School] to get out of here and get a job," Bryson said. And to be fair, there is probably the added benefit of seeing his friends. He isn't certain what that future job is just yet, but he knows what he will be doing the day after graduation. He'...

  • Season now open for spring chinook

    Mar 4, 2021

Fishery managers from Washington and Oregon on Feb. 23 approved this year’s spring Chinook angling season for the lower Columbia River, with low returns expected to once again impact recreational fishing. The 2021 forecast for upriver spring Chinook numbers just 75,200 fish, which would be the second-lowest return in the past 20 years, and lower than the 81,300 fish that returned last year. While the projected return is only about 6,000 fish fewer than 2020, the forecast numbers trigger tighter restrictions meant to protect salmon runs l...

  • New pet grooming business coming

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 4, 2021

MIXED--By the time you read this, we may be back to some soggy weather after a supposed dry spell, which is at least happening this Monday morning after some heavy fog. Of course those cloudy days often wind up a bit damp, but if we get any break from the downpours we've had, that will be a good thing, so we'll hope for the best. I know we certainly enjoyed the dry moments and the bit of sunshine we saw at the end of last week, even though it didn't last nearly long enough to suit me! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 4-10...
