  • Rate increases for Washington natural gas customers start Nov. 1

    Oct 31, 2019

Natural gas customers in Washington will see higher energy bills beginning Nov. 1 due in part to last winter’s colder temperatures coupled with the 2018 gas pipeline explosion in British Columbia. The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission recently approved rate adjustments ranging from 4-15 percent for Avista, Cascade Natural Gas, NW Natural, and Puget Sound Energy natural gas customers. Higher customer costs for 2019 reflect wholesale natural gas price increases caused in part by the October 2018 Enbridge Pipeline rupture, w...

  • Gingerbread contest returns to downtown Longview

    Oct 31, 2019

The Longview Gingerbread Haus Contest is back for the 8th year, and organizers are hoping for a surge of entries to re-energize the Dec. 7 event. Held downtown every year on the first Saturday of December – the same day as the Longview Christmas Parade, the contest received only four entries in 2018. Organizers attribute that to not enough advance publicity about last year’s contest, and so this year Gingerbread Haus Headquarters is getting the word out early to give bakers ample time to plan, bake and decorate. The contest will be held Sat...

  • Final weekend for exhibit at Redmen Hall

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 24, 2019

WET AND SOGGY--As we came to the end of the third week in October, we definitely got some wet weather, which not only started forming "lakes" where they didn't belong, but also caused a slide along SR 4, which are pretty much the "norm" for us during these rainy times, so I do hope you are mindful of that. If you've traveled that road for years and never had to take a short cut, or never missed an appointment or never had any issues at all, well, you are definitely blessed with good luck, as most of us have experienced one problem or another...

Although the farm was located on a small island before the coastal land rose to its current level to the coast of Sweden, the word "Appelö" means "Apple Island" in Swedish. A mixture of circumstances in Finland a century ago forced many of its people to leave their native land. This happened to Carl A...

  • WDFW officials offer tips for living with bears this fall

    Oct 24, 2019

Fall is here, and Washington's black bears are stocking up fat reserves for winter hibernation. Black bears are opportunistic when it comes to finding food and tend to select foods with the highest number of calories, which can bring them into proximity with people. Officials concede that watching a bear can be an awe-inspiring experience, but warn residents to avoid attracting them to their homes. "Do everything you can to avoid an encounter with any bear, which help to keep them, and you, out of harm's way," said Rich Beausoleil, WDFW...
