  • Parade marshal shows love of life, sense of humor

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 17, 2014

Rolly (Roland) Armstrong has made such an impact in his 14 years as a resident of Cathlamet that he was asked to represent the community as grand marshal in Saturday's Bald Eagle Day parade. "I have zero experience at being interviewed," Rolly said on Monday morning. He also has zero experience in being grand marshal, so it's a big week for him. According to Ashley Turner, the director of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce, 25 people were nominated for grand marshal this year. Rolly was...

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 17, 2014

There are six girls vying to be Queen of the Wahkiakum County Fair this year. It may sound romantic, but there is a bit of work involved. It's a bit like a summer job, according to Fair Manager Patty Dursteler. "The girls are responsible for fund raising," Dursteler said. "They will be selling fair passes and raffle tickets and coming up with their own ways to raise money." The princess who raises the most money wins the crown. The money they raise will go towards bills, upkeep, improvements and...

    Mark Howie, Wahkiakum County Sheriff|Jul 17, 2014

Even great parents can forget a child in the back seat, but caregivers who are unaccustomed to transporting children are especially prone to forgetting. Think about the last time your routine was interrupted. Maybe you forgot something, or were afraid you might forget something. Or maybe you decided to leave your child alone in the car, thinking "I'll just run into the store for a minute." In either case, it's important to know the risks and consequences associated with leaving kids in cars - especially hot cars. Risks In 10 minutes, a car can...

  • Naselle blacksmiths' work leads them in strange directions

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 10, 2014

"The blacksmith used to be the king of crafts," Naselle resident David Curl said. "If you needed a tool you went to a smith." Solstice Forge sits on a hill just east of Naselle. It's a sunny peaceful spot with a garden that grows larger each year and a dog named Patches that just can't get any bigger. If you step into the shade of the shop, your ears will begin to adjust to the older melodies playing on the radio, and your eyes will light on the tools of a trade that went out of fashion with the...

  • Singer/songwriter releasing first solo recording

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 10, 2014

When Kerrie McNally started taking guitar lessons at age nine, she never imagined that one day she'd be writing her own songs. When she was 15 and got her first paying gig, playing at a wedding, she never imagined she'd be putting out a solo album. The CD album in McNally's hand is proof that dreams evolve over time and experience. And it's proof that shifting dreams can still come true. Music slept in the in-between years. There was too much noise with five kids to raise and a job at a paper...

  • Many events ahead for your enjoyment

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 10, 2014

NICE HOLIDAY--I hope you had a nice Fourth of July holiday as we certainly had some good weather for it. As I begin this week's column, it sounds like we'll have been in a bit of a "heat wave" this week, so I hope you've been using sunscreen and limiting your time in the sun so you don't start out your summer with a nasty burn. It goes without saying that you need to stay hydrated and if you're one of those people with a four legged friend with you, do be careful about keeping them out in the sun too long and making sure they get cooled down...

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 2, 2014

GETTING BETTER--As I began this column, the weather wasn't so great but by the evening hours, it dried up and it wasn't too bad. However, the forecasters are predicting some very nice weather for this week, with a real toasty day on Tuesday, but nice throughout the week, so by the time the Fourth of July rolls around it should be just right for barbecues, fireworks and all the holiday doings.
