  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Jul 4, 2019

Lest We Forget Throughout our lives we all have had events, people, and places, especially, that have influenced our memories. We still at times gaze into space recalling a past place we wish we could see again, but it is gone. Many of you remember when Johnson Park was the Rosburg School. Some of you were students who loved to romp the halls but now have children and grandchildren of your own. Others were the teachers who had a great influence on their young minds. The nice thing is that the...

COOLED OFF--This past Saturday morning we woke up to wet roads and wet grass and lots of clouds, so this was definitely a cool down from what many thought was going to be a "sunny and hot" weekend. However, it seems the forecast changed and the temperatures dropped enough in the evening hours so that some were even kicking on the heat, or putting that extra blanket back on the bed! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays from June 27-July 3 are Don Speranza, Cliff Garrison, Austin Luthi,...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Jun 27, 2019

Climate in Wahkiakum County "The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco." This is a quote that has been credited to Mark Twain, but has not been verified. True or not, Mark Twain has not to my knowledge been in southwest Washington in June. It has been so cold this month we should rename the month "Juneuary" in honor of Jack Frost's late departure. For those of you who are relatively new to the community and for those who have been here forever, you may still like to...

GHHS has just announced a new campaign to raise $120,000 by July 31 to fund new sails and critical maintenance needs for both vessels. The two tall ships last purchased a new set of sails in 2008. The impact of 4,000 days of howling wind, bright sun, rain showers, and salt air have taken a toll on their existing sails, which have a lifespan of 8-10 years. For the past few years the crew has carefully sewn...

  • Horse gaming riders enjoy improved footing

    Valerie Antijunti|Jun 27, 2019

We had a very good turn out for our second gaming show, 22 entries for the six events. We also had 10 entries for the Texas Barrels 50/50 jack pot. We made over $700. That money will go into improving our arena. The weather was perfect, and with the 30 yards of screened dirt that we added to the arena, the footing was improved, which shows in the improved times. Results are as follows: PeeWee (11& under) 1. Abby Doan won a head stall, 2. Sophia Bitner won a feed dish, 3. Kaitlyn Jessee won a fleece throw and 3. Tru Most won saddle soap. 12-18...
