Lest We Forget Throughout our lives we all have had events, people, and places, especially, that have influenced our memories. We still at times gaze into space recalling a past place we wish we could see again, but it is gone. Many of you remember when Johnson Park was the Rosburg School. Some of you were students who loved to romp the halls but now have children and grandchildren of your own. Others were the teachers who had a great influence on their young minds. The nice thing is that the...

State fishery managers are reminding anglers that the mainstem Columbia River – both above and below Priest Rapids Dam – is closed to fishing for salmon due to projected low returns of summer Chinook and sockeye salmon. These closures are reflected in the 2019-20 Washington Sport Fishing Rule pamphlet, which is available online at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations. Areas of the Columbia River above Priest Rapids Dam typically open for salmon fishing around July 1, but those areas will remain closed to protect the lower number of sum...

COOLED OFF--This past Saturday morning we woke up to wet roads and wet grass and lots of clouds, so this was definitely a cool down from what many thought was going to be a "sunny and hot" weekend. However, it seems the forecast changed and the temperatures dropped enough in the evening hours so that some were even kicking on the heat, or putting that extra blanket back on the bed! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays from June 27-July 3 are Don Speranza, Cliff Garrison, Austin Luthi,...
Climate in Wahkiakum County "The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco." This is a quote that has been credited to Mark Twain, but has not been verified. True or not, Mark Twain has not to my knowledge been in southwest Washington in June. It has been so cold this month we should rename the month "Juneuary" in honor of Jack Frost's late departure. For those of you who are relatively new to the community and for those who have been here forever, you may still like to...
The tall ships of Grays Harbor Historical Seaport, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, are calling on their followers and fans for help. GHHS has just announced a new campaign to raise $120,000 by July 31 to fund new sails and critical maintenance needs for both vessels. The two tall ships last purchased a new set of sails in 2008. The impact of 4,000 days of howling wind, bright sun, rain showers, and salt air have taken a toll on their existing sails, which have a lifespan of 8-10 years. For the past few years the crew has carefully sewn...

The Washington State Department of Health is urging people to know the symptoms and act fast if they suspect a stroke. Stroke is the sixth leading cause of death and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in Washington state. “Getting the right treatment in time can mean the difference between life and death,” said Kim Kelley, manager for the Department of Health’s Washington Coverdell Stroke Program. “One of the biggest challenges in stroke treatment is the first step: making sure people recognize symptoms and know to call 911 immedi...
We had a very good turn out for our second gaming show, 22 entries for the six events. We also had 10 entries for the Texas Barrels 50/50 jack pot. We made over $700. That money will go into improving our arena. The weather was perfect, and with the 30 yards of screened dirt that we added to the arena, the footing was improved, which shows in the improved times. Results are as follows: PeeWee (11& under) 1. Abby Doan won a head stall, 2. Sophia Bitner won a feed dish, 3. Kaitlyn Jessee won a fleece throw and 3. Tru Most won saddle soap. 12-18...
Rea Trim loves to talk to groups about hospice and grief. Currently, she is working as a chaplain at Community Home Health and Hospice and is available for presentations on grief and hospice. She draws on personal experience with a touch of humor to connect with audiences in the same way she connects with patients and families during times of great stress. It’s that connection that lights her up. “I want to educate people about hospice so they have conversations about it earlier,” said Trim. “My wish for families is that they would transit...
Anglers who fish for salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River basin will no longer be required to purchase an endorsement to do so beginning July 1. The department has used revenue from the endorsement to monitor and enforce fisheries in the Columbia River Basin. WDFW’s legislative authority to implement the Colum...

NICE--Last weekend wasn't too bad, as Saturday started out with some cloudiness but by noon, the breeze blew those clouds away and the sun came out, which made for a decent day. Anytime temps are in the 70s, I'm a happy camper, as once they reach the 80s, I'm ready to hide in the house! Father's Day was the same way, and even with the clouds moving in later, we got to see the "Strawberry Moon" just over the dark cloud bank in the evening so that was pretty neat. I hear some dampness is forecast for sometime this week, so while most will not be...
Dogs and Goats Throughout the Westend all the way to Naselle, I have had the opportunity to talk with many who have a variety of animals from cattle for meat and/or dairy and goat farmers. All these people I talked to have dogs. These dogs are used as work dogs, guard dogs, and pets. They protect the property, animals, and the owners. I have met some who have a goat or goats as pets and they have dogs as well. I acquired a brown and white chested pit bull as a rescue dog a little over a year...
