  • Daylight Savings ends Saturday at midnight

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 4, 2021

NICE ENDING--I was so happy to have the last weekend of October turn out to be a really nice one, as so often our Halloween events and our little trick or treaters wind up sloshing through the puddles and having to cover their costumes with rain jackets, but not this year; yippee! It was great to have the sunshine out on Sunday, but I do wish the freezing morning hours could have stayed away a little longer; brrr! Those temps took me by surprise so I was definitely feeling the chill when I first got up but thrilled to see the blue sky and sunsh...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Nov 4, 2021

Last week I spent two hours with one of my very favorite friends, Kayrene Gilbertsen. She moved to Battle Ground several years ago, so I don't get to see as much of her as I did when she lived on Puget Island. She was one of the first friends I made when I moved to Wahkiakum County. She was raised on the Island and she is about as Norwegian as anyone can be. As we all get older, the friends we've known for a long time become so precious. We hadn't seen each other in a couple years, so it was a...

  • Trick or treat

    Nov 4, 2021

  • Lots of Halloween events this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 28, 2021

NASTY OUT--I believe it goes without saying that we have had a wet and nasty beginning to this week but thankfully, we did have some nice breaks in there on Sunday so we didn't get the nastiness all day, nor the all night downpours that have caused us massive flooding or long outages in the past. Of course I am writing this a bit early while I still have power and internet, so hopefully the prior statement is still true by the time you read this! I do know one thing, the rain and wind combo sure took down the leaves in our area, as well as...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Oct 28, 2021

"It's a rainy day in Georgia" and Grays River. This is real fall rain. I know because my arthritis shows its painful head when I move from my bed. The rain reminds me that at many times during the past year, I missed the sound of rain on the roof. But each day, before I move very much, I make a thank you list for God and pray for a peaceful world. On my list, I give thanks for just waking up, reminding myself that I am alive and moving. Second, I give thanks for Ben, my dog, who is always at my...

  • FOS auction coming to a close this Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 21, 2021

WET START--As this week begins we certainly are having a soggy day, so I'm happy that we had a nice Saturday and hopefully the forecast for a dry Monday and Tuesday came true, as the rest of the upcoming week looks pretty doggone wet! Fortunately for us, the forecast often changes at a moment's notice and we wind up drier than planned, so we'll keep our fingers crossed that this latest storm system will veer to the north of us. However, if it does happen to come straight at us, it definitely loo...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Oct 21, 2021

Sad day for state workers: Today is the date set for state and other workers to lose their jobs if they haven't had a covid shot. Did we have to go this route? I want folks healthy, especially children, but this does seem extreme. Masks are easier than this! I feel for all those who now have no job and are leaving the state or looking for another job in the area. Stay believing in better days and say a prayer for those who are without jobs, please. Photo of the Week: Debbie Littlefield and her...

  • Clear vegetation around your home to reduce the risk of fire

    Oct 21, 2021

As leaves change color and begin to fall, the State Fire Marshal’s Office reminds residents that accumulation of leaves, branches, or other debris around the home can increase the risk of fire. Dry vegetation in roof valleys, gutters, and below decks can ignite if exposed to burning embers from open chimneys or nearby landscape burning. To reduce the risk of these hazards, create a safety zone around your home by: · Removing dead or dry leaves, pine needles, and fallen branches from your roof and rain gutters. · Trim back branches hanging...
