With community events wrapped up, all was quiet on the Western front the week of Christmas. Mark and I attended the candlelight Christmas Eve service at the Naselle Lutheran Church, had a game night with some friends, and then enjoyed a quiet holiday. Complete with a video chat with our grandson, watching movies, and slurping down some homemade clam chowder. Heading into New Year’s week, I’ve been reflecting on this past year and looking towards 2025. I’m not usually one for resolutions or ma...

The POW/MIA Missing Man Table is meant to remind viewers of fallen, missing, or imprisoned U.S Service members. Nearly 81,000 American service members remain missing after having served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and other conflicts involving the U.S. There are key elements in each table that are meant to be a reminder to never forget those service members who never came home. The table is round, to show our everlasting concern for our missing men. The cloth is white, symb...

My husband, the generous giver that he is, shared his germs with me and I was laid out with a bad head cold all last week. Since I was sick, I missed out on all the plans I had for the week. I was disappointed to miss the Christmas party at the Grays River Grange, playing Bunco with friends at the Naselle Community Center, and just being able to get out and about. Thankfully, I was feeling well enough on Sunday to get to some fun events. Mark and I ventured into Naselle to the Finnish American...

A weekend of Christmas events When I opened the blinds on Saturday morning, it was 8 a.m. but it was so dark out I wondered if I had looked at the clock wrong. Thick, oppressive clouds brought a deluge of rain and after a week of sun, it was an unwelcome way to start the day. I had already had a rough week, between nursing a sick husband and battling a self-doubt-filled depression spiral, I was left exhausted. However, I was determined not to let those things keep me from all the great events...

The Christmas season is upon us. I love Christmas time! The lights, the decorations, the fun activities and events, and time to spend with family and friends. One thing we've done at our place is we've hung a huge Christmas star between our two concrete silos. It can be seen by all driving through Grays River at night. Our community knows how to celebrate spirit of the season. There are several events in the next few weeks to enjoy. The West Wahkiakum Farmers Market is hosting a Holiday Bazaar...

Going into the third quarter, the Comets held a significant lead. In their first...

Veterans Breakfast at Rosburg Hall As always, American Legion Post 0111 outdid themselves with a delicious Veterans breakfast on Saturday morning. Events like these allow for friends, family, and neighbors, that maybe haven't seen each other in a while, to connect over a good meal. It's one of the unique opportunities of living in our small community. Each year, I'm impressed how members of the Post set aside a date to honor and serve other veterans and the community. They not only cook the...

Season of Gloom When Mark and I were first considering moving to the Northwest, we had a lot of people ask us how we were going to do with all the rain. We honestly brushed it off without much thought. We had visited many times and we felt like we would be fine. Our first winter proved us wrong. Coming from Denver, Colorado, where the sun shines on average 300 days per year, we were not prepared for days upon days of rain and gloom. Seasonal depression has been a very real thing for both of us....

Welcome to my new column, Westside Stories. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Lisa Yeager. My husband Mark and I moved to Grays River in June of 2021 after purchasing the old Schmand dairy farm on North Hull Creek Road. We spent our first 2 years clearing years of overgrowth, metal, concrete, and loads of other debris left behind. Our original plan was to develop and build an RV Park, however, due to several setbacks, that venture is permanently on the back burner. On...
