  • Make your donations of food or cash to the pantry

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jul 13, 2017

It’s definitely summer. The hay fields are full of activity, and I am missing the rain. My house has been filled with family for nearly two months, and it looks like that will change by the time this paper is published. Back to quiet times again, and believe me, I will miss that. Please remember the West End Food Pantry when you are out doing your own grocery shopping. Pick up an extra can or two of soup, canned meats, canned fruit or veggies, add a few items to your cart to help out the pantry with "kid friendly" ready-to-eat or e...

  • Group planning to continue senior lunch

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jul 6, 2017

I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful 4th of July. Speaking for myself the whole weekend was incredible, filled with family laughs, love and fun. These times are so precious and even though the whole family wasn’t present, it was so special with those who were able to make it. As an added bonus, my nephew and niece will be here for another week before returning to the desert heat of southern California. News from Naselle: Summer is finally here, so there aren’t many school events to write about. If you or your group has an event coming up...

  • Community mourns loss of sudden passing

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jun 29, 2017

I hope everyone made it through that heat wave Mother Nature threw at us last weekend. It was not what I like. With the dry weather predicted for the next few days, please think carefully and plan for safety if you are having fireworks for the 4th. News from Naselle: It appears that one young man who attends Naselle-Grays River Valley High School is being rewarded for his prowess in several sports by being chosen as Male Athlete of the Year by the Daily News. • Out of the frying pan into the nice, cool valley

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jun 22, 2017

Made a quick trip to California over the weekend to get my granddaughters home for Father’s Day. We left here at 4 a.m. on Friday morning and it was raining, arriving in Stockton at about 4:30 p.m. to excruciating heat. More heat the next day, and I left at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning to escape the 110 degrees slated for that day. Made it home in less than 11 hours to our beautiful weather. News from Naselle: Looking for a fun family event? The annual Friends of the Naselle Library community picnic will be held this year on Tuesday at the l...

  • Sounds of family create a happy place

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jun 15, 2017

A week ago my house became filled with laughter and fun after the arrival of three of my teen granddaughters. We have been to the beach, to the Astoria Column, shopping, hiking, hot-tubbing and just plain being lazy. I needed this, and to top it off, now my niece and her daughter have arrived. This is heaven with the young giggles and music in the car and in the house. Such fun. I didn’t plan too well for the two-week visit with the granddaughters as it cut into the Father’s Day weekend. So I will make a quick trip to California on Friday to...

  • Blood drive is coming up fast

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jun 1, 2017

After I posted my column last week from California telling everyone how hot it was, the weather took a turn to cooler. The rest of my trip was in the high seventies and low eighties. Nobody wanted me to leave, because apparently I brought the nice temps with me. It turns out the weather was warmer here than down there. Go figure. I just know it is so good to be home in the trees, green grass and quiet. No traffic noise, sirens and weird folks walking up and down the sidewalks. Three of my granddaughters will be flying in on the 7th for a...

Down River Dispatches Greetings everyone from hot and sunny California. It’s already 96 degrees and only noon. Thank God for air conditioning. News from Naselle The Naselle Track team is headed to Cheny for the State Championship playoffs. Great job team, let’s go Comets! Best of luck. • Busy weekends ahead with variety of events

    Trudy Fredrickson|May 11, 2017

This past week has been a great catch up time for my sisters and me. Just hanging out with no particular rhyme or reason for doing things, except being together. We had a wonderful time at the Little Mermaid play in Naselle last Saturday evening. On Monday, since it was such a lovely day, we headed to Woodland to visit the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens. What a lovely place to visit, beautiful gardens with a variety of flowers and trees, but a concentrated effort on lilacs. The old home of Hulda Klager is maintained beautifully with knowledgeable...

  • Vacation trip wonderful, but return home is great

    Trudy Fredrickson|Apr 6, 2017

Vacations are wonderful, but it is always incredibly good to be home. So sorry that I didn’t bring warmer and drier weather back with me, but I must say I took much nicer weather down to southern California with me. The temps never got over 79 degrees and it was overcast most of the time - perfect. By the way, I hate the desert and would never live there. Family is important enough to visit though. Coming home to real trees and everything green is the best. I spent time with two of my nephews and their families and was happy to spend extra t...

  • Knowledge Bowl teams place in tournaments

    Trudy Fredrickson|Mar 16, 2017

Okay. I love the rain, probably more than anyone else around here, but when I see how difficult it is on the newborn calves getting around in the muddy pastures, covered from head to toe in muck, that’s enough rain. Is everyone ready for the "wearin’ o’ the green”? Here’s to a Happy St. Patrick’s Day for all the readers. News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams this week include: Thursday, high school track at South Bend at 3:30 p.m.; Friday, baseball and fast pitch at Ilwaco at 4 p.m.; Monday, baseball and fastpitch a...

  • High school sports start Saturday with baseball

    Trudy Fredrickson|Mar 9, 2017

Are you ready for that extra hour of daylight? Remember to spring forward on the 12th and set your clock ahead one hour. Mother Nature has certainly been showing her indecision on the weather this past week or so. We have had it all, from snow, to hail, to rain and wind, thundershowers and some beautiful sunshine with rainbows. Ahhh, living in the Northwest. News from Naselle: Spring sports are here. This week’s calendar for the Naselle Comet teams includes: Saturday, baseball with Wahkiakum in Naselle at 4 p.m.; Wednesday, fastpitch with I...

  • Birthday fête set for Bob Larson's 90th

    Trudy Fredrickson|Mar 2, 2017

It’s hard to tell whether Mother Nature wants it to be Spring or remain Winter. One day sun, then rain and snow. Last Saturday was a gorgeous day, and my sister happened to have the day off, so we decided to have lunch at the Grays River Cafe. After a yummy cheeseburger, we took a drive out Altoona-Pillar Rock Road. We drove some distance and spotted a car parked on the side of the road. As we approached, we noticed three unusual animal buddies coming towards the two guys next to their car. It was a friendly little brown and white goat (who c...

  • Naselle hoop teams in regional playoffs

    Trudy Fredrickson|Feb 23, 2017

Spring is in the air, daffodils are beginning to bloom, the frogs are singing but I’m still looking for my first trillium of the year. I have even seen a few eagles in the trees near the Grays River waiting patiently for the fish to come in. News from Naselle: Great job, Naselle Comet and Comette basketball teams! They will both advance to the regional playoffs. On Friday, the Comets will take on Taholah once again at Tumwater high school at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the Comette team will play Neah Bay at Mt. Tahoma high school at 10 a.m. Winners o...

  • Sunny Monday is great for writer's dogs

    Trudy Fredrickson|Feb 16, 2017

I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoyed that beautiful day of sunshine on Monday. My dogs were in heaven as we walked for about two hours in the woods and of course had to stop a few times so they could take a dip in all three creeks. Mice are easier to catch after the water goes down in the flooded fields, so they enjoyed quite a few snacks as well. Hopefully we will see more of that kind of weather soon. Even though I love the rain, I’m not so partial to the five inches of silt that gets deposited on my driveway, or the mess it mak...

  • Valentine smorgasbord to be held this Sunday

    Trudy Fredrickson|Feb 9, 2017

Snow, snow and a little more snow. It was beautiful to look at, but treacherous to drive in for many. Lots of trees and big branches down which also caused some distraction for a few. I would like to say a huge thank you to our county crews for all their hard work and for probably losing a bit of sleep in order to keep things running smooth. I know I won’t drive in it if I don’t have to, but many folks have to get to work, and without your crews keeping the roads clear, that would not be possible. Thank you. News from Naselle: Sports cal...
