    Cathlamet Christian Fellowship has announced that they have a new youth intern arriving on March 12. Kristi Bjerkaas is a graduating senior from Crown College, St. Bonifacius, Minn. She has a bachelor of science in Discipleship Ministries with a minor in Intercultural Studies. Bjerkaas will be working for the next six months as a youth mentor and help activate youth ministries.     Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 71 will be conducting free vessel safety checks on March 17, from 10 a.m. til 2 p.m. at the Elochoman Marina in Cathlamet. A vessel safety check is a courtesy examination to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations.     Hunters must submit an application to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) by midnight March 13 to be eligible for this year’s spring black bear hunting permits. A drawing for the permits, applicable to specific hunts in western or eastern Washington, will occur in mid-March. Permit winners will receive notification in the mail by March 31.     The Washington State Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to stabilize a slope just east of Stella at Milepost 50.9 on SR 4. DOT engineer Denys Tak said March 6 that WSDOT has awarded contract to Wilder Construction Company of Bellingham. The company hopes to start work by March 19, if not sooner, Tak said.     Wahkiakum County officials decided this week not to try to expand the target site for deposit of dredge spoils at the lower end of Puget Island. In February, two Ostervold Road residents asked the county board of commissioners to lengthen the disposal site upstream in front of their residences, which are experiencing erosion.     Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business at their meeting Tuesday. They started off the day with a financial committee meeting. Treasurer Paula Holloway reported that because of declining revenue over the past few years, the amount of money in cumulative reserves has dropped from $9.18 million in 2000 to $4.95 million on February 28.     The US Coast Guard last Friday released its assessment for the proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project, concluding tanker traffic could be handled safetly under tightly controlled conditions.
