  • Warriors & Widows Salmon Derby yields fish and fun

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 29, 2019

It was a glorious day for fishing on Tuesday. It really couldn't have gotten much better for organizers Willie Johnson and Doug Martin, or anyone lucky enough to be involved in the fifth annual Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby. A crowd of captains and servicemen had gathered around the fish cleaning station at the Elochoman Slough Marina at 2:30 p.m., as the last of the participants began to prepare their fish for weigh-in, which ended promptly at 3 p.m. Chris Giang, Army, from Tumwater, hadn't...

  • Commissioners, officials debate salaries, space needs

    Rick Nelson|Aug 29, 2019

Procedure versus practicality: That was the debate Tuesday when Assessor Bill Coons met with the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners to discuss a request to promote two employees. With a senior analyst departed to a new job, Coons said he wants to realign his staff. He'll assume some duties of the departed employee, and he wants to promote chief deputy/residential appraiser to chief deputy/commercial appraiser to take over some other duties. He also wants to promote his chief deputy/clerk to an administrative position to reflect additional...

  • Bridge work: It's a thrill!

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 29, 2019

It takes a special kind of person to do bridge work, according to the contractor for the Puget Island bridge project, Jim Cailiff. And even more rare, at least for now, are the women who do the work. Lisa Cienega used to jump off the roof of her house and onto a trampoline when she was growing up in Florida. These days, she works on bridges in the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to Salem, as a member of a union, Pile Drivers 196. The Puget Island bridge project was nearly done when I caught up...

  • A little Puget Island bridge history

    Aug 29, 2019

In the archives of the Doumit Building, Cathlamet artist Ruth Doumit came across the Aug. 17, 1939, jubilee edition of The Eagle, celebrating the opening of the Puget Island bridge 80 years ago. A highlight of that event in 1939: President Franklin D. Roosevelt activated a switch via telegraph to open the bridge....

  • Challenges and consequences ahead

    Aug 29, 2019

To The Eagle: In considering long-term consequences for America, its citizens, and the entire world, which of the following two possibilities would, in your opinion, be the most significantly catastrophic: 1) a corrective financial recession during 2020-21 or 2) reelection of Donald Trump in 2020? If you choose to answer my query, I would be interested in hearing your reasons for making the choice. Dennis T. Gordon Puget Island...

  • Japanese students have Wahkiakum trip

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 29, 2019

Cathlamet resident Connie Christopher has long considered hosting an exchange student, but an entire school year was just too much while she was still working. Instead she decided to try hosting Japanese students who participate in a two week exchange program through Lower Columbia College. She had such a good experience last year that she decided to do it again. That's how Karin (pronounced Kalynn) Koike and Ayaki Suzuki, two vibrant students from Atomi University in Tokyo, Japan, ended up in...

  • Open mic night Friday at Skamokawa Grange

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 29, 2019

WEEKEND WEATHER--This past Saturday morning saw us dodging a little moisture but by afternoon, it was dry again. Sunday was truly a wonderful day, and by the looks of the traffic, half the people in the state were headed to the beach! They say we will have a heat spike by the time you read this. Depending on which weather station you listen to, there could be a chance of some light showers creeping in to the weekend forecast but I guess we'll have to wait and see what shows up. STILL DRY--As of this writing, the burn ban in our county is still...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Aug 29, 2019

Through the Fog of Time Part II The house where Hjalmar and Mabyn Klint raised their three children is still seen today in the valley where they had lived. The three Klint brothers must have known what an opportunity they had in acquiring the land. The area had a natural clearing, and they did not need to cut down as many trees in order to have decent land for farming or raising cattle. In many other places like Eden Valley, it would take decades to clear the tree stumps for a respectable farm....

  • 2019/2020 classical series set at Liberty Theatre

    Aug 29, 2019

It's their best season yet with a partnership between the Liberty Theatre and 45th Parallel Universe Orchestra. Since 2009, 45th Parallel has happily demolished distinctions between old and new chamber music, bluegrass and jazz, fiddle and folk. By bringing fragmented audiences together, 45th Parallel reflects Portland’s surging creative communities in fresh and imaginative ways. 45th Parallel stands apart from the region's other chamber groups by its borderless and unbounded innovation. Call it 360-degree programming. The city’s finest mus...

  • Musicians keeping Irish music alive

    Darrell Alexander|Aug 29, 2019

Have you ever had an experience that you felt was surreal like a dream, but you are awake and conscious? That was my experience this past Saturday. It really started last week when the editor asked me if I wanted to cover a story about the ceili musicians staying at Skamokawa Vista Park. This group came from the Portland metro area to play and dance at Vista Park, Duffy's Irish Pub, and Skamokawa Grange #425. I initially thought I would go to Duffy's and take some pics and do a story, but I met...

New videos show tsunami impacts in Washington New videos allow Washington residents to see simulated models of how large tsunami waves are likely to impact their communities. Scientists with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources have just released a series of modeled simulation videos that show tsunamis started by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone. Using detailed tsunami models, the simulations show the estimated height and speed of waves that are expected to reach Washington communities minutes after...
