  • They remember

    May 30, 2019

Last Thursday, 44 John C. Thomas Middle School students were given a lesson in service, first learning about Memorial Day from veterans, and then spending a little time marking the graves of local service men and women who gave their lives in service to our country with flags. It's an annual event orchestrated by teacher Eric Hansen. On Monday, Wahkiakum residents and veterans took a little time out of their day to honor those who died while serving their country. Bill Tawater addressed the...

Wahkiakum County commissioners looked to the future during their business meeting Tuesday. First, the board reviewed the status of beach nourishment plans with Cape Horn residents. State and federal agencies have approved permits necessary to deposit dredged sand on eroding beaches, Commissioner Dan Cothren said. The US Army Corps of Engineers has been surveying the shoals to establish a dredging program for the summer, said Commissioner Dan Cothren., then they can share their plans with affected property owners. "That's what we're waiting...

  • On the refuge: White-tail numbers are expanding

    Diana Zimmerman|May 30, 2019

Though a scenic through way along the Columbia River may never be recovered, what seemed to be a setback at the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for Columbian White-tailed Deer a few years ago has led to positive outcomes for salmon and waterfowl habitat, all without an adverse affect on deer population. “I think it was 2011 when we first noticed that Steamboat Slough (dike) was washing out,” Paul Meyers, a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who has been at JBH for 10 yea...

  • Memorial Day, 2019

    May 30, 2019

Following are the remarks delivered at the Memorial Day remembrance ceremony sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5297 at Greenwood Cemetery on Monday. By Bill Tawater Commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5297 In quiet services across our country today, we come together as a nation to remember those lost in the clash of battle; the thunder of bombs, the roar of tanks, the rumbling of airplanes flying overhead and the scream of artillery shells. This Memorial Day, we come together to appreciate the freedom that we enjoy today as we hon...

  • Light a candle instead

    May 30, 2019
    1

To The Eagle: Over half of the Nevada legislature are women, and they are busy lighting candles instead of cursing the darkness. Their senate just passed the Trust Nevada Women Act which codifies women’s reproductive rights and decriminalizes all abortion related matters. They are also on the cusp of joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. The object of the compact is to bypass the Electoral College by mandating that their six electors commit their votes to whichever presidential candidate has nationally won the most popular v...

  • Dollar General drain on sheriff's department

    May 30, 2019

To The Eagle: Dollar General stores are a proven magnet for shoplifting and crime. There is a website for shoplifters that lists Dollar General as an easy target. They will be calling our local sheriff and deputies for help which will be a drain on their department as well as taking time away from a real local need. Is this how you want your hard earned taxes spent, taking care of a corporate giant or taking care of our community? Kristin Lee Puget Island...

  • Party planned to send off trekking kayaker

    May 30, 2019

To The Eagle: When I first heard about Kyleen Austin’s Ketchikan to Puget Island kayak adventure two thoughts came to mind. First, what an amazing adventure and second, how do you get ready to paddle solo for 1,000 miles? Seriously, the preparation that goes into being ready mentally, physically and spiritually in addition to the logistics of itinerary planning and provisioning are mind boggling. I would be a frantic mess, but Kyleen isn’t. She’s ready to go and excited to share this great adventure with all of us. To find out more about her c...

  • Port 2 increasing fees at County Line Park

    Rick Nelson|May 30, 2019

Commissioners of Port District 2 on May 21 agreed to raise camping rates $2 at County Line Park effective this Saturday. Port Manager Jeff Smith proposed the increases, saying current rates of $13 for tents and $23 for recreational vehicles are great bargains and that the increase would put rates in line with the winter rates at Skamokawa Vista Park. The new rates would be $15 and $25 per night, respectively. Commissioners adopted other recommendations from Smith for County Line: They set a maximum stay at 21 days, increased by $5 the fees for...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|May 30, 2019

The Rosburg Legacy Everyone leaves a legacy in their lives that only a few may know or even remember; however, along life's journey there are glimpses of heaven to be seen from Cathlamet to Naselle. I am not talking about the wonderful sights we experience and at times take for granted; I am referring to what really makes life a bit of heaven here, the people. I have had the pleasure of meeting many who have been here for a short time to those who have lived here all their lives. On one recent...

  • Sheriff's Corner

    Sheriff Mark Howie|May 30, 2019

Lots going on around the county, and in the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office as well these days. First and foremost, I am pleased to say that our theft and burglary cases have plummeted the last couple months. Two burglaries and three thefts were reported in the entire county. Zero thefts or burglaries were reported in the Skamokawa area or areas where we have held neighborhood watch meetings or coffee-with-a-cop meetings. In my experience, wherever there are police/community meetings to talk...
