Every year, commercial fishermen and women from Wahkiakum County head to Alaska to make their living. They’ve been doing it for generations, and it’s because, as one of those fishermen explained to me, fishing isn’t something you do, it’s who you are. What they are right now is angry. On July 17, the Bristol Bay fishing community learned that they would receive $0.50 per pound for their catch, less than half the price they received the year before, which was $1.15, plus the $0.30 per pound t...

Wahkiakum County PUD General Manager Dan Kay had some good news for the board of commissioners when they met on Tuesday. He recently received a call from Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez who serves Washington’s 3rd District, letting him know that the PUD was being awarded nearly a million dollars for their project to find a secondary water source on Puget Island. Kay said the PUD asked for $2 million, but this was a very large chunk moving forward. “She is going to continue to look for oth...

Local food banks are seeing more traffic these days thanks to a trifecta of higher prices at the grocery store, a decrease in SNAP benefits, and no summer lunch program. If you think it’s just families with kids, think again. The pantries are getting visited by seniors more than ever, as they look for ways to extend their sometimes limited incomes. Tom Gartski at the St. Catherine Catholic Church/St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Cathlamet says numbers are up because of the price of food. “A lot...

I think my winter chores in January have yet to be accomplished so I’m way behind the eight ball this year! This week looks to be dry with only a hint of cloudiness, and temperatures more to my liking, so I hope you’re enjoying the sunny days. Here’s hoping these 70s stick with us at fair time as that would be nice and comfy. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from August 3-9 are Austin Smith, John L. McClain, Brian McClain, Treasur...

Last Thursday and Friday, a CenturyLink internet outage inconvenienced residential and business customers in Wahkiakum County, including at least two local businesses in Cathlamet, the post office and The Wahkiakum County Eagle. It was cash only at the post office, and if you wanted to send something overseas, it would have to wait. On the other hand, for customers checking for updates on package arrivals, the alert would not be coming. They were just going to have to check their mail and find...

END OF ANOTHER MONTH--We’ll wrap up July and begin August on Monday and I’m still not done with my pre-Springtime chores; yikes! Now that it's hotter, the summer chores haven’t been done either as it’s too hot for me to work outside, so I feel for all of you who have to do that. The dampness we got on Monday morning was actually quite refreshing, but the rest of the week is going to be dry and toasty, so here’s hoping you’ve been slathering on the sunscreen and keeping yourself hydrated. Remember to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours or...

On Tuesday, the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners discussed grants, including one to conduct a feasibility study on a consolidation of water systems, as well as other issues and potential issues that could affect the utility and its customers in coming years. General Manager Dan Kay said that five grants were submitted as of the last PUD meeting and they were now in the “hurry up and wait, follow up stage,” and that too was keeping them busy. After learning about a cybersecurity gra...

Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners met last Thursday for their July meeting to discuss traffic issues on port property and a few other matters. With increased traffic to the new River Mile 38 taproom, and some other changes around the marina, Port Manager Todd Souvenir had some suggestions to improve traffic flow, including a 5 mph speed limit. “It makes sense to slow it down a little bit,” Commissioner Scott Anderson said. “You’ve got a lot of boat traffic and a lot of people...
To The Eagle: I was told by none other than Ralph Kaiser that just because I don't live in the valley any longer is no excuse to not write letters to The Eagle. Given that encouragement here goes. First, thanks, Ralph! Secondly, it's only fair to other avid readers of my somewhat frequent opinion pieces to continue from afar. Actually, Longview isn't that far but it sure seems like it after 13 years in the Elochoman. I suppose one of the most noticeable things is that it doesn't really get dark at night. I miss the night sky with the stars,...
To The Eagle: Well now, last week’s letter in The Eagle, written by none other than the Liberal Town Crier, with his usual anti-religious rants, went way beyond the nonsense that is typical in his letters. This time his ugly comments were clearly aimed at Christians. The writer went into some of his so called historical facts dating back to the 3rd and 4th century. Here is a real fact for you. That writer thinks people of faith are somehow ignorant, perhaps even foolish to believe in God; well just like Karl Marx. He thinks we should embrace h...
No pedestrian, bicycle or ambulance access for 10-hour window of closure Travelers using State Route 433 between Longview and Rainier, Oregon, will need to plan ahead and prepare for a lengthy detour during an up-to-eight-day closure of the Lewis and Clark Bridge. At 8 p.m. Sunday, July 16, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews from Combined Construction, Inc. closed the bridge to motor vehicle traffic to replace two expansion joints and a fractured floor beam. The bridge must be closed to ensure a long-lasting repair...
WET START--As this work week begins, we are seeing some real rain here in West Valley and I can’t say I’m unhappy about it. My lawn and plants were looking a bit brown and miserable, so this unexpected summer drink was perfectly timed! I’m pretty sure those still in the midst of haying would not agree with that sentiment however, so I feel bad for those folks. Here’s hoping the upcoming forecast comes true and they can salvage those fields that still need to be harvested. Today, I’m thankful for the drink that our forests are getting and the s...
