    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 4, 2022
    1

By Diana Zimmerman It was an extraordinary moment for Little Island Creamery's owners and team last week at the American Cheese Society awards ceremony, when their brie took first place in national competition. The society is the only organization in North America that does any rating for cheese, according to Kathleen McDonald, who owns the creamery with her brother Dick McDonald. "It's stunning news," Kathleen said. "We're stunned. We did not expect this. It's all the big names, it's...

  • Workable emergency radio system needed

    Jul 28, 2022

To The Eagle: Wahkiakum County proposes a two-tenths of a percent increase in sales tax charged within the county. The county’s current sales tax rate is 7.6 percent. The proposed increase would increase that rate to 7.8 percent. While my general reaction is one of opposition to every tax increase, this proposal has my support. Its goal is to generate funding specifically earmarked to maintain a workable, county-wide emergency radio system. This system is a critical factor in providing residents and visitors to the county with timely e...

  • Bigfoot family on display in Skamokawa

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 28, 2022

WORD OF THE WEEK; HOT!--It seems summer is upon us as we are seeing all these toasty temperatures this week, which was really not enjoyable for somebody like me who doesn't like the heat, but I know others do, so I hope you enjoyed it. However, I heard some of you got a bit sunburned, so I do feel bad for you and hopefully you're feeling better by now. I understand that the weekend temps are going to be in the mid to upper 70s so while it's still going to be plenty warm out there, at least it...

Photo of the Week: Justin Laine sent out a great family shot of everyone in the family at a Finn Fest six years ago. The girls' costumes are so sweet. This shot reminds us how fast time passes and how quickly kids grow. I hope all families will try to attend for some period of time. When you are there, do visit the Tori room where vendors have all sorts of Finnish art and/or fun things for sale. Check out the Appelo Archives vendor booth. They have just received newly published books that are a...

  • Little free library appears above downtown

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 28, 2022

David and Dayle Olson spied their first Little Free Library in Seaside at a library fundraiser. Dayle was smitten with the idea of having their own, but for some reason, David was a little less enthused. "I would suggest it periodically to David and get a kind of lukewarm response," Dayle said. Little did she know that her husband would visit Jim Kolberg's Little Free Library on Butler Street one day and come home with his first real keen feeling for the enterprise. To be fair, he picked up a...

  • CPR class was money well spent

    Jul 21, 2022

To The Eagle: If you get a chance to support our local volunteer fire departments – please do so. Here’s one reason why they deserve it. On July 10, I took a CPR Cerification class at the Cathlamet Fire Department. Volunteer EMT Justin Roberts was the instructor. EMT Steve Lewis was there to help with questions and demonstrations. Justin was obviously very comfortable with the subject matter. He was friendly, informative, encouraging, open to questions and included just enough “war stories” to keep us entertained. The fire department has inv...

While the engineer was optimistic about the quantity of ground water available on...

GREAT TIME--Another Bald Eagle Days festival is in the books and what a great time it was. Everyone was commenting how many folks were in town, how many vendors there were and how many things there were to do, besides all the music and food that was available, so kudos to the organizers and to all those who took part in the parade, etc.; it was terrific! The fireworks show at the end of the day was the “frosting on the cake” and for those who were experiencing all the fun for the first time, they seemed mighty impressed. I think most folks als...
