Bald Eagle Days 2022 is in the books, and by all accounts it was a big hit with locals and visitors to Cathlamet. The streets were lined with people, and SR 4 was lined with parked cars. The Elochoman Slough Marina was full of yachts and campers. People argued naturally about whether or not it was the longest parade ever. Children bounced from one inflatable to another in the Kid Zone, climbing, sliding, and laughing all along the way. There was food aplenty, and happy smiles everywhere, as old...

Hopefully with the higher tempe...
Terry Bonny, who was a teacher, coach, and driving instructor at Wahkiakum High School, passed away in March. On Saturday he will be honored with the first Annual Terry Bonny Fun Run, a two mile/5K run/walk which begins at 8 a.m. at the high school track. Bonny was a gifted artist, a graceful and talented athlete, and a beloved teacher and coach. When he spoke, you listened, and you'd be glad you did, because what he had to say was likely either wise, or smart, or something that starts with...
The language about the amount that would be added to the sales tax by the proposal outline was incorrect. The new tax for radio communications would be .02 percent. The proposed tax would be .02 percent added to the current sales tax. County officials say the tax would raise 20 cents on every $100 collected, or two cents per $10. Also, in Downriver Dispatches, the starting time for the Bald Eagle Parade in Cathlamet was incorrect. The parade will start at 12 noon....
To The Eagle: Last week’s AP (Jan. 6th Hearing) article had three paragraphs on “sworn testimony” of 2nd hand hear-say. A witness who saw nothing and wasn’t present during the event repeated what others had said, and they were just repeating what they had heard. Hear-Say = Rumors. Sworn testimony needs to be directly from people actually inside the vehicle. Media hyped the rumor testimony as being the “whole picture” of what happened. That created desired public prejudice and a rumor based reality. One writer forgot that the 2nd Amendment w...
To The Eagle: All this talk about Roe vs Wade, how about preventing abortions? We all know it takes a man and a woman to make a baby. If you need sex and don’t want babies, it is the responsibility of both men and women to use condoms, diaphragms, or any form of birth control or just plain abstain to prevent making a baby. There was a time we saved intimacy and shared that with a mate we love. I hope it still exists. I understand tragedy can happen such as rape or a woman’s health is at a life and death situation. That’s different. Babie...
Wahkiakum County Prosecutor Dan Bigelow is running for a fifth term. Before he was elected to the position nearly 16 years ago, he was deputy prosecutor for two and a half years, and prior to that, he handled felony trials and felony defense for 13-14 years. He also worked as an appellate defense attorney. "It helps as a prosecutor to have been a defense attorney because you know what a defense attorney is looking for in a case," Bigelow said. "It also helps to be an appellate attorney when you...
NICE BEGINNING--We wound up with a real nice weekend and as this week begins, we’re off to another nice, dry, warm day and I do hope you’re all taking advantage of this wonderful stretch of “finally Summer” weather! It’s too bad we all have nine million things to do after such a long, dreary wet Spring, and so trying to pick what to do first in our long list of chores is fairly daunting, but here’s hoping you just took a giant leap and dove into that list head first. If we do get a lengthy spell of dry weather, just remember that we can dry...

To The Eagle: I'd known Dan Bigelow for several years and always knew he was the coroner and prosecutor but had no idea that he was an emergency medical technician here in Wahkiakum county. A few years ago I showed up at our health clinic so ill with pneumonia that an ambulance was called to transport me into PeaceHealth in Longview. I imagine that, partially due to my very compromised condition, was the reason I initially freaked out when I saw the coroner come in. He quickly assured me that I wasn't actually dead and he in fact was the ambula...
To The Eagle: Wow; Rasmussen (July 11th) says President Biden’s job approval rating is 37% and his disapproval is 61%. Rasmussen (July 11th) says direction of USA on the right track is only 19%, while 76% say we are on the wrong track. The nation is hurting as the value of each US dollar is still dropping, which artificially triggers more inflation. Fuel costs are still rising, as our president has now started exporting our national oil reserves. The Biden and Patty Murray supported plan to begin taxing unrealized capital gains, is coming to l...

They have assembled 100 free pie baking kits, which include pie tins and all the how-to’s for submitting entries to the Wahkiakum County Fair on August 16, from 3-8 p.m. The kits are available at the Wahkiakum County Eagle off...

The lot, just around the corner from Main Street, will be a welcome addition to downtown Cathlamet. Parking on Main Street is often difficult even mid-week. Photo by Ian Brandon...

Members of the Cathlamet Town Council addressed some thorny issues when they met Tuesday, including possible sewer system expansion in Rosedale and possible zoning changes for Main Street business properties. There were many questions, few answers, and Mayor David Olson said he would work with town staff to return with more information. The town has spearheaded an effort going back several years to expand the sewer system, especially up Boege Road and its connections, identified as Area A. In a June 20 feasibility report from Gray and Osborne,...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to join Northwest RiverPartners, received an update on Wahkiakum West’s expansion project, and discussed fleet issues in a conversation about long term planning. Ken Johnson of Wahkiakum West started the meeting with an update on their project to expand broadband to the east side of the county along SR 4. Dense rock west of Skamokawa, personnel issues, and “rusty” aerial design skills slowed the project, leaving them about two month...
To The Eagle: Some of us may remember when the Pledge of Allegiance was spared the ignoble Under God. It was slipped in during the time when Ike was president. It seemed innocuous at the time but time has shown it was the camel's nose under the edge of the tent of separation of church and state. Followed a few years later by In God We Trust on our currency. Now it seems that anyone that wants to be even considered for political office needs to approach the voters on knees bent in prayer. Just last week the supreme court decided that it was...
