  • County urges people to report storm damage

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 13, 2022

NASTY WEATHER--I wrote last week that the rains were coming and that I had hoped we wouldn't get hit too hard, but unfortunately, that didn't happen. Sadly, our area and most of our state, simply got hammered with the relentless rainfall that melted the mountains of snow we already had and along with high tides, brought massive flooding everywhere! So, we went from over a foot of snow, to multiple feet of water, which covered all of our valley floors and washed out culverts, tore up the blacktop and destroyed roads, stranded animals, brought...

  • Creamery expands with kitchen, meeting rooms

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 13, 2022

There has been a kind of cycle of expansion and contraction at the Little Island Creamery in recent years, as the owners and their employees have sought to define and refine their mission, their dreams, and ultimately their future on Puget Island. The new Little Island Kitchen and Meeting Rooms is just one more manifestation of their endeavor. Intially, owner Dick McDonald and his sister, Kathleen, planned to build a store on the property to sell their cheeses and butter, as well as other...

    Rick Nelson|Jan 6, 2022

Members of the Cathlamet Town Council took a first look at the possible development of a waterfront park at the mouth of Birnie Creek when they met Monday. The council also gave initial approval to amending the town's speed limit ordinance to accommodate a reduction of speed on SR 4. New Mayor David Olson presided at the meeting and announced the resignation of Council Member Bill Wainwright, which leaves a vacancy on the five-person board. "[The year] 2022 starts with a new mayor and council me...

  • Winter Warmth drive continues through Jan

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 6, 2022

MELTING--As I begin this column, we still have plenty of snow on the ground in West Valley, with a layer of ice on top, but we are also seeing some raindrops, so the hope is that we see green grass soon. Of course, we are also hoping for some rather slow thawing conditions so we don't wind up in a flooding situation, which we have seen happen before. Let's just hope it doesn't turn into a disaster as currently there is a flood watch issued! MONDAY'S SLIDE--As we all had feared, SR 4 was once again the site of a mud and rock slide around MP 44...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Jan 6, 2022

Snow seems to be the word for the New Year! Nine days of snow is overboard a bit. It sure was fun for kids out of school and many off work at home with kids and grandkids. There's another slide on SR 4 east of Cathlamet so some folks will be getting more and more frustrated, first stuck at home from snow and then a landslide from heavy rain. Denise Blanchard is at Columbia Memorial; Denise, we're all pulling for you. My weather forecast calls for more rain so it seems we all need to hunker down...

  • Lions Club offering equipment for elderly

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 6, 2022

I became a great big fan of the Lions Club in early November. I found myself in a bit of a bind, unable to travel too far, and looking at a long wait for an online order. I needed a wheelchair and I needed it fast. It turns out the local Lions Club has been collecting donated wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes, bath chairs, and more, for situations similar to mine. They even have a hospital bed available right now, as well as a cart to move oxygen. The items are available to anyone who needs...

  • Ah! The snow!

    Dec 30, 2021

A winter storm dumped six inches or more on the region over the weekend, creating a "winter wonderland" on Puget Island, above. Right: Wahkiakum PUD crews responded to repair many lines knocked down by falling trees and limbs. "The snow settles on tree branches that then settle or more often break off and land on power lines causing short circuits," commented PUD General Manager David Kay. • Crews kept busy keeping up with weekend's snow

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 30, 2021

While the Washington State Department of Transportation clears SR 4 and other state roads, and the Town of Cathlamet is responsible for city streets, the Wahkiakum County Road Department has been preparing and clearing county roads since the snow started falling in Wahkiakum. Jeff Tobin, the head of the county road department, is up early each morning to check on the roads. “We’re trying to keep up,” Tobin said. There are two crews working four plows, with one spare ready to go: one crew on th...

  • Masks don't provide protection for us

    Dec 30, 2021

To The Eagle: Sometimes some things bear repeating. Masks. To understand why masks do not work, let’s first talk about breathing. It’s “the process of moving air out and in the lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the internal environment, mostly to flush out carbon dioxide and bring in oxygen.” When we breathe in oxygen, it goes into our cells and it creates energy but it also makes carbon dioxide. To flush out the carbon dioxide, we breathe out. If we don’t breathe out carbon dioxide properly, it could lead to a variety of sicknesses such as...

  • Retiring mayor notes accomplishments

    Dec 30, 2021

To The Eagle: Eight years ago, two highly respected citizens approached me with concerns about what was going on at the town, and they asked if I would consider getting involved. I decided to run, and in 2014 I was elected mayor. They were justified in their concerns, as there were some issues with the bookkeeping that were reviewed by the state auditor, but we were able to successfully resolve these issues with time and diligence, which allowed us to focus on other matters. After four years in office, I was re-elected to a second term. As mayo...

  • Family grateful for local PUD crew

    Dec 30, 2021

To The Eagle: We wanted to shed some light on the local PUD in our county for the work they did yesterday reconnecting our power after going nearly 12 hours without. I don’t know their names or who was in charge, but they were professional and polite even though they were cold and tired from Mother Nature dumping wet snow all day long. My wife and I were praying for help and God answered the prayer around 10 p.m., when they showed up. What a blessing to see them work as they did tirelessly to restore our power. Our family gratitude goes out t...

The Cathlamet Town Council approved the law enforcement agreement at their...

  • Shoeboxes were a big hit; Happy New Year!

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 30, 2021

WHITE CHRISTMAS--For all those folks who were wishing for a white Christmas, it certainly looked like you got your wish! I had hoped we'd just get a couple of inches but Sunday's snowfall was quite impressive, that's for sure! The heavy snow brought branches and trees down and caused some power bumps and even power outages. Then there were the clumps of heavy snow/ice which fell from the trees and caused some windshields to break, so the snow caused some extra hazards to watch for that some...
