There were seven new cases of covid-19, this week, with three reported last Thursday and four more on Tuesday, bringing the cumulative total to 294. Of those, 24 are considered potentially active. The risk of contracting covid-19 in Washington is very high, according to the press release from Wahkiakum Health and Human Services, and they confirm that there is “active community spread” in the county. WHHS says that vaccines are the best possible protection from covid-19, and that boosters are rec...
To The Eagle: Last week’s Eagle had two particularly well written articles. James, to your rhetorical question of “why,” I think the answer comes down to the age-old balance beam of “fear and greed,” and then often justified with religion. When you peel the onion back, this is the political metric that is usually at the core. You call the religious aspect a cudgel, I call it a crutch. I think the last line in the other Eagle article about denial and CRT is a great example of this supposed justification. PS: Regarding your PS: I wonder ho...
To The Eagle: We plan to vote “yes” on the replacement levy for the Wahkiakum School district (February 8 special election) and urge our neighbors to do the same. This simple, minimal measure carries forward the existing school levy and helps provide critical funding to address class sizes, technology, safety equipment, Mule athletics and necessary staff. The school district is not asking for an increase in funds, in fact district tax rates are projected to decrease over time. Families, children and quality of life improve when schools are ade...
To The Eagle: A writer in last week’s paper suggested that the reason many good people don't want to run for office has something to do with religion being used as a cudgel (stick). The real reason many good people don't run for office is that the two parties have at the ready, a professional smear machine designed to destroy anyone that dares to challenge the political establishment. I think good people should run for office and point out to the voters that when the smears start, and they will, the words of Jesus Christ apply, “Let him amongst...
To The Eagle: The school levy for Wahkiakum School District will be voted on February 8, 2022. Every school district in Washington State has a school levy that provides for maintenance of basic needs - books, teachers, teacher assistants, special education tools, extra curricular activities, and school building maintenance to name a few. A school levy is not just for schools but helps define the community it is in. If this school levy does not pass, the school will not have money for basic needs. Eventually, if not immediately, families will...

First, I must apologize to Ed and Steve Blain because in last week's Grays River Diking District report, I mistakenly said Steve Blain instead of Ed Blain. I bet both Steve and Ed are wondering what's wrong with this woman? Truthfully the list is long but I assure you I now realize there are at least two Blain families in the area, but one spelling of their last name. Many thanks to Marlea Blain for correcting me with humor and forgiveness. Wilho Saari: Now, to the sad reality of the death of...

Members of the Cathlamet Town Council on Tuesday approved the expense of extra engineering services for two construction projects and took care of some housekeeping business. The council approved contract amendments with the firm Gray & Osborne to include project management services for the projects--constructing sidewalks along South Third Street and the Butler Street Parking Lot upgrade. Clerk/Treasurer Sarah Clark said because of the complex reporting for the projects funding grants, it is essential for the town to have project management....
The Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners met briefly last Thursday to do a little housekeeping and talk about potential business. Commissioners authorized Port Manager Jackie Lea to sign paperwork to resolve a boundary issue with the Town of Cathlamet pending a final survey of the former sewer pond property, of which both entities have a share. They also waived their compensation for any special meetings and authorized a resolution to adopt one change to Port 1 commissioner district...
To The Eagle, I fancy the readers of our paper to be articulate well educated souls. Given that, allow me to posit this. Perhaps I can get an answer to a question that has been lurking at the edge of my consciousness for some time now. We live in a society of something over 240 million so why is it that we are left with the choices for leader being only between a moron and a bully? There are so many intelligent and experienced people being shoved aside by the most ridiculous of reasons that prevent them from being in positions of power. We...
To The Eagle: Is there any person more pathetic or foolish than the man or woman of 40-50-80+ years who is “woke,” who is the recipient of the privileges and capabilities from the most free and open society in the world, but who hates it and his fellow citizens who wish to keep it free? Who insists on racial quotas, shaming the majority of people because of the evils and mistakes of our past history, or members of the hated red party? Who goes along with the destructive divisive policies of power from obsessed authoritarians [the Karens of gov...
To The Eagle: I have to comment on a letter last week from a writer who's views are mostly extreme to me. The writer suggested maybe we don't need a Constitution, well I guess he thinks we don't need freedom of speech, freedom of religion, or any other of our Bill of Rights. I guess he believes we don't need any elections of the president, Senate or House of Representatives anymore as is in our Constitution. I don't know about anyone else but I am not happy Joe Biden has three more years in office but imagine him president for life, or anyone...
To The Eagle: “Basic civil, human, and economic rights were violated under demonstrably fraudulent pretenses. The sacrifices we thought we were making for the common good were sacrifices made in vain. Unlawful lockdowns demoralized the population and ruined lives. The tragic reality is that this was all for nothing. The only way to prevent these events from recurring is to exhaustively investigate not just the origin of the virus, but every corrupt and misguided decision made by politicians, NGOs, public health organizations, and scientific i...
CALMER--We were all very relieved to have a much calmer weather pattern this past weekend, which gave us some milder temperatures and some sunshine and also some awesome sunrises and sunsets. After the snow and the relentless rainfall and flooding, this break was definitely appreciated. The current weather forecast for a drier weekend also suggests much colder temperatures, so we'll have to keep an eye out for the possibility of temperatures falling into the freezing category. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Jan. 20-26 are...

A day of heavy rainfall last week has left Wahkiakum County residents dealing with flooding and other storm related incidents. Heavy rain arrived last Wednesday and kept coming into Thursday, melting the previous snowfall to send streams out of their banks and hillsides sliding down onto roads. Wahkiakum County Public Works Director Chuck Beyer submitted this report on Tuesday: "Wahkiakum County Roads had significant snow damage from trees and limbs falling. Elochoman Valley Road is still not...
Wahkiakum County commissioners approved a short plat for a 33-residential lot development outside Cathlamet and heard a variety of concerns about a proposal to hire an epidemiologist when they met Tuesday. The development will lie on pasture land along Greenwood Road, just outside the Cathlamet town limits. It will include 27 single family lots and six duplex lots, with a planned density of 39 homes. Four streets will serve the area and meet standards to be county roads; a fifth will be a gravel, private road reaching some of the residences....

Fifteen are considered active. ----------- Six more cases of covid-19 were reported this week, with five on Monday and one on Tuesday, bringing the cumulative total in Wahkiakum County to 276, with 11 cases considered potentially active. The six cases are not really related to each other, Wahkiakum Health and Human Resources Director Chris Bischoff...
To The Eagle: Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted on Elon Musk: “Let’s change the rigged tax so The Person of the Year will actually pay taxes and stop freeloading off everyone else,” in which Elon responded “If you opened your eyes for 2 seconds, you will realize I will pay more taxes than any American in history this year. Don’t spend it all at once. Oh wait, you did already.” Not knowing who Elon Musk is, I reckoned I should read up on him. His income is estimated around $270 billion. I’m trying to grasp inside my head having an income in the...
To The Eagle: According to Town of Cathlamet Mission Statement: "Cathlamet is committed to providing credible leadership and quality services to the community through transparency of its processes, good stewardship of public resources, respect for the Town's heritage, and valuing its diverse citizenry." And where is that commitment when our past and present town council members have dropped the ball in maintaining our recently closed Community Center? After previous council members passed management of the facility to the Wahkiakum County...
