Wahkiakum County commissioners approved a road closure and fire district expansion and addressed a variety of other issues when they met Tuesday. Columbia Street will be closed from Jacobson Road to SR 4 on September 9 for paving work. Commissioners approved a petition from Fire Protection District No. 4 to expand its boundaries. District personnel collected petitions signed by over 60 percent of residents of the area in question supporting the annexation. State law allows a county commission to approve such an annexation without a public vote...
A crowd turned out to watch kids compete in the annual Spelling Bee at the Skamokawa Grange on Saturday. The event is sponsored by the Grays River Grange and the Skamokawa Grange. Several members from the Cathlamet Woman's Club volunteered. There were eight children participating in the bee, with about 70 people in attendance. "It was a fun, exciting event," Pearl Blackburn said. Next year, they may add an adult class. Fourth grader Jesse Deweber took first and won $75 in the 3rd, 4th and 5th...
To The Eagle: I go around the county reading safety books to nursery school children and daycares. The kids are given plastic Junior Deputy Badges. Before I pin them over their hearts, I have them raise their hands and take a basic oath that is appropriate for their age, just as every police officer does before they are given that enormous responsibility to protect and serve the people. I have them repeat after me: “I promise to be a good citizen. I promise to obey the laws. I promise to be a good neighbor.” As a police officer of 31 yea...
To The Eagle: Well, gasoline is approaching $5.00 a gallon again and I hope all the people that voted for the Democrats have long trips to work everyday; you've earned it. Why, don't look now, but the Taliban is back in control of Afghanistan so it won't be long before terrorist attacks come back to innocent people everywhere. I read the letter to the editor about how much sense it makes to defund the police, I had to wonder if the author may have had some run-ins with the law, or maybe he was just having a bad day or maybe he is a great guy...
COOLER/WET?--According to the forecast, we may actually see some showers this week but as of Monday morning, it was just cloudy, but drizzle Tuesday morning was a possibility. We'll also have to wait and see if the Friday forecast for 30 percent chance of drizzle comes true, and considering it's Fair time, well, we almost expect it! You see, it's sort of a running joke with all us locals as it can be dry for weeks and months on end but come Fair time, well, we wind up with some rain! Not always of course, but about 9 out of 10 times, I'd say...

Cathlamet and Grays River are the only two fire departments in Wahkiakum County that have transporting licenses, which means they are the only departments with ambulances to transport people to the hospital. They are responsible for providing that service to all the communities on their respective sides of KM. To be clear, they may not be the first to respond, but they are the ones who will be responsible for getting anyone in an emergent situation to the hospital. There was a recent question...
Wahkiakum County Port 1 Commissioners discussed a variety of issues at their meeting last Thursday, including the waterfront, rates for the new A-frame cabins, and the use of some of their property near Una Avenue. Port Manager Jackie Lea gave a quick overview of a recent meeting with the Town of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County commissioners about the waterfront, and Port 1 Commissioner Scott Anderson, who had also been in attendance, shared some thoughts. “The whole community needs to see s...
There was a small but enthusiastic response to the 2021 Wooden Boat Show at the Elochoman Slough Marina this weekend, and organizers-which included Allen Bennett and Julius Dalzell of the Lower Columbia Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association, as well as members of the Cathlamet Yacht Club-were pleased. There were 16 boats on display, according to CYC member Dean Carmine, and someone came from as far as Eugene, Oregon this year to show off his vessel, Bennett said. Photos by Diana...

To The Eagle: Any police officer who cries about police reform and the positive changes states like ours are making to policing are part and parcel to the problem. Defund The Police means bringing more accountability to policing and moving functions and responsibilities to others who are better suited to execute them. I propose states start by doing away with elected sheriffs policing in their communities and have them return to a more traditional role as jailers and security/custodians of the courts. Research shows that elected sheriffs...
DAMPNESS/HEAT--As this new week begins, we are enjoying a mild, dry day after a pretty good soaking on Saturday. Here in West Valley, it was a nice steady mist which lasted most of the day and I was very thankful for that. However, temperatures are on the rise again and it could bring temperatures back up into those dangerous mid-90s or higher range, so I hope everyone has prepared themselves for that. Please keep yourself and all your critters hydrated and remember, the sun is not your friend if you're out in it very long, even with...

SR 4 is a pain. We all agree on that. I know using SR 4 for jobs and appointments is a pain. Trying to keep to a schedule can be brutal, but the DOT has to work on highways within a certain summer time frame. I guess the issue is understanding we're all in the same boat. I take the ferry, drive HWY 30 to the Longview bridge and "cross over the bridge," as the old song says. Let's all be as patient as we can! Photo of the Week: For those new to the area, logging trucks may sometimes be annoying,...
Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: August 1 - 1:01 p.m. A juvenile said she was being sexually abused by a family member and that she wanted to harm herself. The sheriff's office was not able to determine the youth's location, but forwarded the complaint to authorities in Cowlitz County, where they believed she might be based on something she said. 3:08 p.m. The driver of a motor home was given...

He is authorized to begin duties in a limited capacity for training...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday hosted a public hearing to gather input on a proposed update of the county Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The board held another hearing last night (Wednesday) at Johnson Park in Rosburg. A report of that meeting will appear in the Aug. 12 edition of The Eagle. The county adopted its shoreline program in the 1970's and amended it in 1981. The county planning commission worked with a planning consultant to draft an update in 2016; county officials and members of the public were dissatisfied with the...
