To The Eagle: Our way of life is under attack, make no mistake about that. When a major political party such as the Democrats publicly take the side of the Chinese Communists over our own government in regards to the origin and spread of a pandemic that kills 100,000 plus Americans it is hard to believe, but believe it. The Democrats spend way too much time with the likes of anarchists, socialists, environmental terrorists and just a lot of people that want something for nothing to realize the following facts: 1. Most Americans love their way...
To The Eagle: I woke up this morning in my warm bed recognizing my good fortune of being born white in this country. I also recognize the pain of those who were born any other color. The inequality and injustice in this country is sickening. We cannot continue down the same path and expect a different result. Changes have to happen. We can either be a part of the problem or part of the solution. I cannot imagine the pain black and brown people live with on a daily basis- the fear of simply walking down the road with their hands in their...
WEEKEND--This past weekend marked the end of May and it ended in quite a racket really, as Saturday morning was booming with rolling thunder and later on, the pounding of some rain, but it was brief, so it was only noisy for a short amount of time compared to other places. Luckily we didn't get "shocked" by a lot of lightning like they did in other areas. Sunday was drippy and cloudy but nothing too major so now we'll see if we get that sunnier weather during the week which was forecast. The down side is, the weekend looks wet again, so not...

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved a budget for spending a large portion of their federal CARES Act funding to address issues arising from the covid-19 pandemic. Commissioners had planned to approve a formal request to the state Department of Health asking that the county be moved to Phase 3 restrictions for covid-19, However, DOH application timing led the board to adjourn the meeting to Wednesday morning (as The Eagle went to press) for approval and later submission to DOH. The county received $250,000 in CARES Act funds, and...

To The Eagle: Well, I had the time to read the liberal gentleman from the Island’s letter in the paper in which he misrepresented my last letter to the editor, clearly he must have been reading someone else's comments while critiquing mine. The assertions he made about the points I was making of course were wrong but one thing you can say about him is, he is consistent and wrong most of the time. I must say unlike some people, that don't mind having their constitutional rights taken away by a politician in Olympia, I most certainly do. The p...
To The Eagle: For as far back as I can remember my dad insisted we put flowers on the Chinaman's grave every Memorial Day. He's the only one of the Chinese workers who was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery. The others who died here were buried on the hillside behind the old gym. Their markers were cedar boards that have long since perished. Only this Chinaman's grave stone is marble. It used to stand upright but years ago it was placed on its back in a concrete surround. This was probably for easier mowing once more land was needed for graves....
To The Eagle: Gee, looks like we turned the corner. Life in the USA is looking up. The virus will not conquer the people, the people will conquer the virus. Thank you Mr. President for your strong leadership, headed by VP Pence, Doctors Fauci, Burks and others. In this state we are on the road to recovery. Especially this county and town. Congratulations to our local officials. And thank the president for standing up to the fool press. Most edifying. Kudos to Kayliegh McEnany and Rick Grenell. Mike Swift Cathlamet...
To The Eagle: This month marked the end of a decade long march through the federal justice system by attorney Sidney Powell in which she exposed a vipers’ nest of corrupt federal prosecutors who started with the Enron Task Force and ended up on the Mueller Russia Probe. Her work effected the exoneration and release of several executives from Merrill Lynch and Arthur Anderson Accounting who had been coerced into false confessions, or convicted on false charges. She then took up the case of General Flynn, who was nailed by the same bunch, and p...
WET--As I begin this on Memorial Day, it is a very wet and ugly looking day out there, so if you had any plans for this past weekend, I hope you did them earlier on, as this start to the week was not a nice one. While radar showed little moisture out there and some folks thought it might be dry, if you happen to live in Skamokawa, it was anything but dry! The forecast calls for very warm and sunny conditions from Tuesday through Friday, so here's hoping all you heat seekers get your wish! WONDERFUL TRIBUTE--I just want to say that the...

In the spirit of keeping things interesting while homeschooling or maybe just something new and foreign to spice up your vocabulary, here is a new word to tryout. Ganawenindiwag. It is the Ojibwe word for “they take care of each other.” We are still working to raise money for the Summer Lunch program this year. If you have the interest or ability to donate funds, you may do so by writing a check payable to Kiwanis/Outdoor Café 2020. You can send your donation to PO Box 515, Cathlamet, WA 98612. I am also still looking for more volunteers to h...

I noticed a sign on the door of the local barber shop in Cathlamet that the Governor had shut them down during this Covid19 pandemic. I had just taken my daughter to a dentist in Battle Ground, and the question that came to me and to others was: Why is a dentist office safer than a barber shop? This is someone violating the 6-foot rule and has his hands in your mouth. I have never seen a barber cut hair facing his customer. This intrigued me into wondering what the difference was between...
The Cathlamet Town Council covered lots of ground when they met Monday, with topics ranging from CARES Act funding and swimming pool to maintenance of town parks. The town will receive $25,000 in CARES Act funds which can be used in a variety of ways to respond to the covid-19 pandemic. Council members said they were unclear of specifics governing their use. "I haven't looked at the fine print, but in most instances, the council has some discretion," said town attorney Fred Johnson, adding he would be happy analyze the specifics for the...
As Washington state responds to the covid-19 pandemic, the Washington Legislature will have to address a huge revenue shortfall in a special session later this year, Sen. Dean Takko, D-Dist. 19, told local officials at a Tuesday roundtable meeting. Because of the covid-19 pandemic, "Everything is up in the air," Takko said. "The process for opening up society and the economy is confusing, Takko said. "I'm hearing about it. I've been told some natural resource activities will open up in a few days. "In the big picture, the budget is way out of...
Because of the start of a water main replacement construction project, Columbia Street will be closed approximately from Jacobson Road to SR 4 starting next Tuesday. A contractor working for the Town of Cathlamet will replace a water main that runs partway down the street and cuts off across timbered area and a creek. The line is old and subject to leaks and difficult to access. The new line will continue along the street and branch off eastward along SR 4. Wahkiakum County has also planned to widen Columbia Street in that vicinity; the water...
The Wahkiakum PUD Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday morning to listen to reports, discuss feedback from the community about their recent public hearing on a proposed financial consolidation, and authorize a contract with a new consultant for their broadband project. Town of Cathlamet Council Member David Olson asked the PUD to help the town’s efforts in obtaining a grant to install a Level 3 Electric Vehicle charging station locally by determining how much it would cost to bring power to t...
As a county extension agent, I get to visit farmers and gardeners from the western reaches of Deep River to the eastern hillsides of Cathlamet. Their rainfall and soils range widely from hillsides to valley bottoms, but they all have important things in common--good food and good people growing it. I’m sharing some of that here in The Eagle over the next few weeks with short features on Wahkiakum farms and details on how you can bring that good food home to your table. May begins the season for...
While doing some research, I came across an article on starttalkingnow.org. Dr. Yolanda Evans and social worker Erik Schlocker of Seattle Children’s Adolescent Medicine Clinic have recently compiled data and found that the “youth have indicated worsened mood and feelings of boredom and isolation, resulting in an increase in the misuse of prescription and non-prescription medicines, and alcohol and drug use as a way to cope.” This is a big deal, so I thought I would share some helpful considerations in order to keep teens safe as they spend...
To The Eagle: Last week a contributor complained about his freedom being trampled under quarantine restrictions. His outburst against continuing public health and safety measures during this pandemic has little to do with exercising constitutional rights and much to do with his being compelled to exercise sustained social restraint. It’s a tantrum. Trump, our executive baby, has them all the time. It’s all about him. The reminder that patriots have died defending our freedom is noted. We honor their sacrifice best when we exercise our con...
To The Eagle: Wow! What an impressive edition of The Eagle last week! The progressive pandemic panic pundits showed up in force in the letters section (four of ‘em – count ‘em!) plus a doom and gloom disquisition from the Associated Press, offset only by the lonely but sane voice of Paul Schreiber. Ironically, a couple of them were touting Obamacare just as Obama was exposed as the ringleader of the attempted Trump palace coup which commenced with the Russian hoax and morphed into the hijack of the pandemic. The virus campaign did sorta follo...
