  • Local business had nice write up in magazine

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 7, 2019

NOT TOO SHABBY--We have had some stunning sunsets around our area and I sure appreciate those who take pictures and post them on Facebook for all to see; they're gorgeous! We were down to 24 degrees out here a couple of days, but the sunshine that followed was awesome and by Saturday, it was even a bit warmer. Sunday had us "lost in a fog" in the morning, with the gray, damp morning being above freezing, but certainly not as pretty. Looks like more dry weather is expected for most of this week, with the raindrops possible towards the latter par...

  • The island of America

    Oct 31, 2019

To The Eagle: Many are concerned about our President’s unilateral trade policy decisions. There’s an old saying that trust is “gained in drops and lost in buckets.” On an almost daily basis, we see our government undermine years of hard work and the goodwill shared with our allies to placate a few voter blocks. Our current administration’s trade stance looks like the makings of the “Smoot Hawley Act,” which started the trade war in 1930, and intensified the Great Depression. Whether by design or default, it’s clear to anyone paying attentio...

  • Justice for all

    Oct 31, 2019

To The Eagle: No U.S. President has ever approached Trump’s blatant and constant attack on democracy and the constitution. President Trump, though that’s an honorary title of which he’s entirely unbecoming, has only one agenda: Utilize the presidency to serve his personal interests. Why did he support U.S. troops in northern Syria in 2018, yet, has given Turkey the green light thereby welcoming an attack on our Syrian Democratic allies whilst granting ISIS support to reorganize? It’s quite simple--Trump Towers. Trump doesn’t mind lasting t...

  • Candidates Forum was a success

    Oct 31, 2019

To The Eagle: Last week’s Candidates Forum at the DeBriae Room was a success in my opinion for two reasons: the audience-half of the forum was respectful and civil in raising issues of local concern, and thereby the candidates seemed at ease to respond intelligently and eventually offer some creative ways to improve our community. The experience may have been the beginning of a new culture of civil demeanor at town council meetings. I do recommend better notification of future candidates forums and a venue that can accommodate a larger a...

If you have yet to attend one of these presentations, I highly encourage you to make this your first; November 12 at 6:30 p.m., in the Hope Center. • Why are we paying more than $30 for car tabs?

    Oct 31, 2019

To The Eagle: Last year I wrote to our legislators about why our renewal for car licensing had risen from $30 to $63.75 (this year went up to $68.25). I received a response from Damon Monroe who is the Rule Coordinator for DOL. This is his reply: “We apologize for not getting back to you sooner. We have reviewed the list of fees and concerns noted in the email sent to Governor Inslee and various legislators. We understand your concerns about the fees; however all of these fees are required by state law and can only be changed through l...

  • Council okays waterfront expansion for brewery, hears speed limit ideas

    Rick Nelson|Oct 24, 2019

The Cathlamet Town Council acted on a variety of issues and revisited the ongoing dispute over parking at their regular monthly meeting on Monday. After going over project details, the council approved shoreline development and conditional use permit for River Mile 38 Brewery. Brewery representative Rex Czuba said the building would be along the waterfront of the Elochoman Slough Marina; it would have a patio deck, and overall seating would be more than double that of the present quarters. The deck would be open to the public during business...

  • Economic realities

    Oct 24, 2019

To The Eagle: Many are so committed to their political leanings that they can’t accept reality, and just regurgitate comfortable tweets. Without even mentioning misinformation about the border points, trade, or foreign policy, let’s look at the supposed “soaring economy” issues we hear about. Yes, unemployment is low, but unemployment stats are a “rear view mirror” way of looking at the economy. Consider forward looking metrics such as: Private sector wages - dropping; Retail employment - dropping (remember, consumer spending is 70% of US GDP);...

  • Attorney endorses Richter for judge

    Oct 24, 2019

To The Eagle: I have practiced law for over 40 years and had the opportunity to appear before many Superior Court judges in Wahkiakum and other counties. In the short time Don Richter has been judge he has shown the temperament, knowledge and hardworking attitude that makes a great judge. Pacific and Wahkiakum counties are fortunate to have such an outstanding individual as our Superior Court Judge. I urge all voters to support and vote for Don Richter Superior Court Judge. William J. Faubion Cathlamet...

  • Final weekend for exhibit at Redmen Hall

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 24, 2019

WET AND SOGGY--As we came to the end of the third week in October, we definitely got some wet weather, which not only started forming "lakes" where they didn't belong, but also caused a slide along SR 4, which are pretty much the "norm" for us during these rainy times, so I do hope you are mindful of that. If you've traveled that road for years and never had to take a short cut, or never missed an appointment or never had any issues at all, well, you are definitely blessed with good luck, as most of us have experienced one problem or another...
