In the biggest "virtual get-together" of their year thousands of amateur radio clubs from across the country communicated last weekend via radio during a simulated major disaster. Our local club, N7WAH, pretended as if there were no cell service, no phone service, no fuel for generators or vehicles, and no mains electricity. We used batteries and solar power only. We gathered on one of the ballfields at Wahkiakum HS, setting up Friday evening before the "emergency" then operated for 24 hours...
Wahkiakum County commissioners authorized emergency repairs and a weight restriction load limit for Wirkkala Road north of Deep River when they met Tuesday. Last week, area resident Nick Nikkila reported the culvert was failing and had only a very small opening for drainage. This week, County Engineer Paul Lacy said the culvert had almost collapsed and recommended the county impose a 10,000 lb. weight restriction on the road. The road crew has already placed steel plates over the 4-foot diameter culvert for basic vehicle safety, he said....
Claire Ward, the marketing and communications manager for Noanet returned to Cathlamet on Monday to share results from the broadband survey recently completed in the county. There were two major takeaways from the survey for Ward. One, there is a demand for internet and two, Wahkiakum residents are nice. Noanet needed 400 completed surveys. Twelve hours after the survey became available, there were already 75 responses. In 24 hours, Ward had 100, and in two days, she’d heard from 10 percent o...
To The Eagle: I was extremely disappointed in Richard Erickson's recent letter to the editor. Instead of chatting with the leaders of Clatskanie and Rainier about Dollar General he should have been using Google to find out about real communities who have lost their businesses to Dollar General. And if he had used Google, he would've found out that Cathlamet is nowhere near the populations of both of these towns in Oregon and therefore cannot be compared. One town even has a Safeway store. These larger communities can somewhat absorb a business...
The Eagle incorrectly reported last week that the Cathlamet Town Council had appropriated $5,000 to the Wahkiakum County Historical Society to finance roof repairs. Instead, the money will be used for changing the fluorescent lighting to LED lighting....
COOLED OFF--This past Saturday morning we woke up to wet roads and wet grass and lots of clouds, so this was definitely a cool down from what many thought was going to be a "sunny and hot" weekend. However, it seems the forecast changed and the temperatures dropped enough in the evening hours so that some were even kicking on the heat, or putting that extra blanket back on the bed! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays from June 27-July 3 are Don Speranza, Cliff Garrison, Austin Luthi,...

Planning was a major concern for members of the Cathlamet town council during two meetings Monday. In a special meeting held Monday afternoon, councilors met with John Morgan to plan the process for developing a strategic plan to guide the council's decision making process. Later, in their regular evening meeting, the council approved a contract to update the town's comprehensive plan by the end of the year, and they met with Department of Ecology Regional Planner Michelle McConnell to go over the final steps to finish the first update of the t...
NICE--Last weekend wasn't too bad, as Saturday started out with some cloudiness but by noon, the breeze blew those clouds away and the sun came out, which made for a decent day. Anytime temps are in the 70s, I'm a happy camper, as once they reach the 80s, I'm ready to hide in the house! Father's Day was the same way, and even with the clouds moving in later, we got to see the "Strawberry Moon" just over the dark cloud bank in the evening so that was pretty neat. I hear some dampness is forecast for sometime this week, so while most will not be...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met Tuesday morning to listen to reports and award a bid for the Grays River substation project. Commissioner Dennis Reid had a question about the rates for the Skamokawa water system after being approached by customers. “One of the concerns is why their rate is set the same as Western Wahkiakum System, whose rate is high because of a heavy debt, and this is a system with no debt whatsoever,” Reid said, “That is hard to understand and to expla...
Wahkiakum County officials may take another look at their ordinance governing junk vehicles following complaints from citizens during the past few weeks. Skamokawa resident Ursula Petralia raised the issue at Tuesday's meeting of the county board of commissioners, saying recent visitors had expressed disgust at seeing a property between Cathlamet and Skamokawa covered with junk vehicles. A fence screens the property from a county road, but the vehicles are visible from SR 4. She also expressed concern that the disabled vehicles could be...

To The Eagle: I would like to point out why Dollar General should not be allowed to come into our community. Namely Factor #3 of the SEPA checklist that was overlooked by the Bureau of Planning, which is stimulate public health and welfare. #1 Dollar General threatens the viability of the existing community and threatens locally owned business, property values, and the ability of Cathlamet to attract new residents and small businesses. #2 They have a poor concern for workers by paying far below prevailing wages and taxpayers are forced to...
