To The Eagle: I have been amazed at the vitriol being directed at Dollar General. I don’t see the same hate toward oil companies that control our local gas stations. Yet they are two of the world’s wealthiest, greediest, and most environmentally dangerous companies. Minute marts generally pay only minimum wage. Should we run them out of the county, pass laws banning them, and put their workers on unemployment? Newcomers to this area may not realize that Cathlamet once had a clothing store, a variety store and another grocery. I have a few que...
Harry Alan Utti, 72, of Seaside, Ore., died on Sunday evening despite the valiant efforts of two unknown fishermen, local emergency services, and other visitors to the Elochoman Slough Marina. According to witnesses, Utti had been alone in his sailboat when it is believed that his engine failed near Cathlamet. Two fishermen appeared in a boat to give him assistance. In Elochoman Slough Marina security camera footage, Utti appears to get underway again a few hundred yards from the entrance to...

WARMED UP--We've had some wild weather recently, with last Friday being really wet, wild and windy at times, which meant falling trees on SR 4 and people's yard things getting blown all over. The pounding rain certainly did not do my flowers any good; poor things look pretty squashed now! However, this week the weather has turned on its summer switch and it's much hotter and drier, and is supposed to be so for over a week. While we shouldn't have to say this, it's already happened, so once again, if you see animals or children left unattended...

The lot on Butler Street was the topic of a Town of Cathlamet special meeting last Friday, as the council tried to move forward with the design of the property. Brice Wozniak, who had facilitated two recent workshops on the matter, compiled and presented the information he had gleaned from public input to the council. He also drew two possible designs for the council’s perusal. Both designs included eight parking spots along Butler Street, murals, terraces, and a public Wi-Fi node. One design h...
To The Eagle: Amateur Radio Field Day is a nationwide event where several thousand radio clubs simulate a large-scale emergency and attempt to contact as many other clubs as possible in North America. We will be operating 24 hours straight. Last year we placed fourth in the nation in our category. New this year is our satellite communications station....

According to Dollar General's website, the stores sell a variety of merchandise ranging from snack food and makeup to clothes and motor oil. Hidden in plain sight The demographics of both Wahkiakum and Pacific Counties have indicated a rise in people moving into the area who are not familiar with the history or customs of the area. The names of roads and towns are peculiar and unfamiliar. Then they enter a quaint little town in Pacific County called Naselle. What kind of name is that? Is it Finnish because of the amount of Finns who were the early pioneers of the area? All kinds of conjecture and speculation come to their mind. I...

The Rosburg Legacy Everyone leaves a legacy in their lives that only a few may know or even remember; however, along life's journey there are glimpses of heaven to be seen from Cathlamet to Naselle. I am not talking about the wonderful sights we experience and at times take for granted; I am referring to what really makes life a bit of heaven here, the people. I have had the pleasure of meeting many who have been here for a short time to those who have lived here all their lives. On one recent...

By Rick Nelson Monday's meeting of the Cathlamet Town Council had a bit of everything: Council members amended their 2019 budget, agreed to hold workshops, covered other business, and ended with a heated discussion about the effort to recall the mayor and three council members. Early in the meeting, the council agreed to hold two yet-unscheduled workshops; the first with John Morgan, a consultant who the council engaged to lead them through a goal setting process, and the second to discuss findings from two previous workshops to collect public...
