After opening the season with a disappointing 186, the Mules golf team took advantage of some home cooking to turn in a four-ball score of 172 against North Beach who posted an incomplete with just 3 players Tuesday at Skyline Golf Course, Cathlamet. Tyler St Onge was medalist with a 36 on a rainy and windy day. The rest of the Mules all shot in the 40’s. Zach Johnston finished second with a 44; Victor Hummer and Joseph Savelio each posted 46; Elijah Doiron shot 47, and Logan LaBerge rounded out the card with a 49. This is a deep squad with s...

Dr. John Kallas was in Cathlamet over the weekend to share a wealth of knowledge about foraging wild foods, including how to identify, harvest, and prepare them, to a lucky group of Wahkiakum residents who registered for the workshop. There were three sessions on Saturday with a focus on the wild foods of the Pacific Northwest, North America, and finally on the wild foods of Native Peoples. After spending a little time in the classroom, Kallas took the group to different spots around Cathlamet...
To The Eagle: Food insecurity for youth is a real problem in our state. One in six Washington kids live in a household that faces challenges in putting enough food on the table. One in eight Washingtonians relies on SNAP (food stamps), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Half of all people on SNAP are kids. If you think things are better in Wahkiakum County, think again. Just check with the school to see how many of the 300 students served every day qualify for free or reduced lunches. The connection between adequate nutrition and...
To the Eagle: I want to send a big thank you to the people who protected my home when it was threatened by the Wildwood Fire. Imagine my surprise when arriving home on Friday after a trip to find an electronic sign advising caution and Department of Natural Resources trucks parked across from my home. Fortunately for me, there were two men from DNR checking on my home, and they told me what had taken place in my absence. Earlier, others had cleared my roof of fir needles and pulled back the bark dust in front of my home and around the shed....
Community service groups and Wahkiakum High School students have raised nearly $10,000 for children's cancer programs at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. The Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet hosted the groups for an award dinner Tuesday evening. Firefighters from Puget Island, Cathlamet, District 4 and Skamokawa departments raised $4,400 for Doernbecher, said Kiwanis President Linda Barth. The firefighters held a boot drive at the end of January and collected donations from motorists. In...
Samantha Wright, a 2007 graduate of Wahkiakum High School, is the first woman to become a full time firefighter and paramedic for the City of Moses Lake. She became a provisional employee for the department in January and official employee on March 24. She is one of 7-10 people each shift. Each shift lasts 48 hours, and is followed by four days off. “I’m super excited for what is next,” Wright said on Tuesday. “I hope it’s my career for the rest of my life.” Wright started volunteerin...
Seattle Shakespeare Company will return to Cathlamet next week to perform a bilingual production of Macbeth, or “the Spanish Scottish play,” as Wahkiakum High School English teacher Audrey Petterson has come to call it. The performance is scheduled for April 11 in the high school gym, starting about 10:10 a.m. and will be open to the public. The company will arrive a day prior to teach educational workshops on Elizabethan dancing and stage fighting to WHS freshmen and sophomores. “Two of my classes have done extensive study of Macbeth, and o...
NICE ONE--I hope you were able to get out and about this past weekend as it certainly was a nice one, at least here. Some folks said they got rained on, but for a change, we were pretty dry out our way, albeit a little chilly in the early hours. With rain due our way, I hope you got some of those lawn and garden chores done while it was nice, as it's that time of year when things will be growing like mad, and hopefully that means more flowers and garden items and not just weeds! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 4-10 are Tim...

Opportunity can often be hidden deep inside of an obstacle. Sometimes, life pitches the proverbial curveball, catching you off guard. When that happens, in order to digest the obstacle, to find the juicy prospect, a simple perspective adjustment can be the saving grace. Use your mind as a tool for digging into an obstacle, rather than letting it hold you down in despair. Nothing is impossible, change is inevitable and you have the power to bend a setback into a future gift for yourself. The community center is excited for a new club starting...
Carl Maurice Meiier, known to friends and family as "Pelle," was born December 29, 1932, to Arne and Clara Meiier, and died March 19, 2019, at home in Apache Junction, Arizona at the age of 86 years. Pelle graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1951 and was in the Naval Reserves. On January 2, 1954, he married Julia “Judy” Lawrence of Westport, Oregon. After the sawmills went down, he moved to Portland, worked in insurance and then owned his own business, Lighting Maintenance Company. Throughout his life he was an avid boater, and enjoyed hun...
To The Eagle: Oh happy day; Robert Mueller has washed all of the collusion away. After two years and over 25 million spent, the DOJ investigation has concluded that not the president, not anyone in his campaign colluded with Russia. Which those of us, who supported @realDonaldTrump, knew all along. This ridiculous and criminal hoax was spread ad nauseum by Democrats, the media- including this and other local newspapers, TV, "entertainment" shows, and repeated by the benighted and hoodwinked consumers of their products. I'm not going to hold my...
To The Eagle: I have completed my research into JB Bouchard's suggestion in last week’s letter to the editor as to what a wonderful world this would be if we lived as suggested by the song Imagine by John Lennon. No religion, no nationality, nothing to kill or die for and more blah blah blah. Well as with most people that think they are smarter then the rest of us they just can't help themselves unless they tell us how to think and live. Last point, I bet Lennon wasn't dreaming when he wrote the song unless it was about the money he would m...
To The Eagle: I have an angering concern regarding how our property tax is appraised. For simplicity, in my opinion, all the appraiser needs to inspect are the sizes of the buildings and property; no matter the view/frontage or the quality of construction and condition. As to the value of what we do to our buildings and property inside/outside, what business is that to the legislators? Did our legislators pay for and plant the garden/flowers/shrubs we put in? Plant/prune the orchards/trees? Lay out the granite, marble countertops? Laminate or...
A change is coming to Main Street in Cathlamet, and with it comes a mix of emotions, certainly for Lacey Vik, and likely for everyone else involved. Lower Columbia Realty has become Wahkiakum Realty, LLC. For Vik, it's an exciting moment as a new business owner, but it's also tinged with sadness, because she won't be able to share this moment with the woman who got her into real estate and taught her everything she knows. Lifelong Wahkiakum resident Kay Cochran, who established Lower Columbia Re...
By Diana Zimmerman Fire season started a little early and a little too close to home this year. Last Tuesday, March 19, local firefighters and personnel from the Department of Natural Resources responded to three fires in Wahkiakum County, which all began that afternoon. The Elochoman Complex fire and the Deep River fire are out, Wahkiakum County Undersheriff Gary Howell said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Wildwood Lane fire, which started as a controlled burn, got out of control and grew to 77 acres at its largest, is listed as 100 percent...
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was alerted after two reports that a big cat, possibly a cougar, had been sighted in the Cathlamet area in the last two weeks. According to Wahkiakum County Sheriff Mark Howie, two weeks ago in the early morning someone reported seeing a large cat coming out of the drive near the sewage treatment plant. It crossed SR 4 to school grounds. A week later, someone else reported seeing a large cat by the large tree on the school campus. Superintendent...
GRAY SKIES--As this work week began, our morning skies were a bit on the gloomy and gray side but at least it was just a little damp, that is until later on in the day and then it rained pretty good. It's one of those things we hate to see, but right now we really need it so I won't complain. As I'm writing this, forecasters are saying we're in for a bit of rain off and on, and given the amount of fires taking off in our county and neighboring counties recently, having some rainfall right now wouldn't hurt anybody's feelings I don't think. It's...
