To The Eagle: A few words spring to mind when I’m asked about Sheriff Mark Howie. Before we get into that, let me share with you how I came to my understanding of what is true leadership. I was 25 when I joined the Army. Our country was at war. The frightening circumstances I found myself facing could only be overcome by one thing… leadership. I found myself under some of the most dedicated and experienced combat soldiers in the world. When facing death every day, you’ll find something, someone, anything, to follow. Ultimately though, we all e...
To The Eagle: Everyone knows real property value. They’re all experts. No different than all the Monday-morning quarterbacks who are out there. But the problem is, they don’t. Assessing real property value for banks or for county taxation is tedious and vexing, especially in a county as small as ours where there are few comparables. There’s plenty of nuance. And rules and rations, etc. If you have any doubt about that, talk to any real estate agent in the county. They’ll tell you how difficult it is. An assessor needs to be able to walk in...
WAS GORGEOUS--The weather at the end of the work week last week, was just like Summer, sunny and warm and just plain gorgeous. The weekend began cloudy however and by evening time, we wound up being quite wet. On Sunday we had a little more dampness and we started the work week the same way. Conditions are still supposed to be "drippy" most of the week but with a little luck, maybe we'll have some dry times in between the showers. THIS IS IT--Here's hoping the Grays River Covered Bridge Dinner that is happening this Saturday, at 4:30 p.m.,...

Wahkiakum County commissioners heard concerns from Elochoman Valley residents Tuesday that a commune might start in their neighborhood and adversely impact their quality of life. Residents of the Monroe Acres development and other Elochoman Valley residents expressed concern that a planned development that was announced over the weekend will adversely impact their lives. According to the website townoftaylor.com, the future Town of Taylor will be a co-op community of businesses with the theme of living in the 1500's. The town will be open year...

The owners of River Mile 38 Brewing Co. have quietly been looking for someone to take over the business for some time now. Little did they know, their future was already in the community, sitting at a table enjoying an Aye Aye IPA. Community is a word that Rex Czuba and Javier Sanchez use a lot, and their impression of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County would put a smile on anyone's face. Czuba is originally from Macon, Missouri. He understands the charm of lightning bugs and a proper thunderstorm...
To The Eagle: It’s only time for a change when change is for the better. Certainly not now. Not this change. We’re asked to change assessors from our current assessor, Bill Coons (with 12 years’ experience and knowledge) to Brian McClain who has had no experience or knowledge at all in real estate, none. And who recommends Mr. McClain? Mr. Baccellieri? I checked. Mr. Baccellieri isn’t even registered to vote in our county! And this outsider Baccellieri fellow has the unmitigated gall to tell us, the voters here in our own Wahkiakum County,...
To The Eagle: This is in regards to the upcoming elections for Sheriff. I am a former resident of Cathlamet and a long time friend of Sheriff Howie. In fact I was his training officer some 30 years ago. I could go on and on about him and his work ethics and his passion and undying commitment for serving the residents of Wahkiakum County but you know that already. When I was his training officer I noted right off his drive to serve the community, his honesty, fairness and doing the right thing all the time. And above all I trusted him with my...
WILD END/BEGINNING--This past Saturday morning our Summer ended wet, wild and windy, as it just poured out here in West Valley and blew a ton of leaves everywhere. While Fall officially came in that afternoon, my calendar said Fall began on Sunday, but that's only because it was the first "full" day, so that's why there was a bit of a difference in announcing the "First Day of Fall" in last week's column. At any rate, by Saturday afternoon, after a brief amount of dryness, we were definitely more soggy than sunny, so for those who like the...

Members of the Cathlamet Town Council worked their way through an appeal of a sewer rate for a business, lifted a building moratorium and handled other business at their monthly meeting on Monday. Steve and Paige Lake, owners of the Bradley House, had appealed a town decision earlier this year to charge them a monthly rate of $276.58 based on an assessment of 2.8 equivalent customer units (ECU) because it was a residence doubling as an antique shop and bed and breakfast. The Lakes appealed, noting that they are open for antique sales very few...

A new shop, D's Art Antiques and Collectibles, opened on Main Street in Cathlamet last month. It's full of treasures collected by Dee Syfert-Subramaniam, who bought property in Skamokawa a few years ago. "I was into collecting for myself," she said. "I had an interest in antiques my whole life." When she was a teenager, she and her siblings found what she described as a "really cool table" at a thrift store on a military base. The three of them worked together to strip it down and refinish it....
To The Eagle: With an election just weeks away, I would like to implore the good people of Wahkiakum County to vote for candidates who are most qualified for the position. My experience in this county is that the most important requirement for landing a job or getting voted into office is how long you or your family have lived in the county; “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Matt Kuhl is running for Wahkiakum County auditor. He has the college degree and work experience to be your auditor. If this position was hired out, the minimum...

The Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners went over reports and discussed facility issues at last Thursday’s meeting. The port is down to one sewer pump after installing their spare. Hoping to avoid the same problem in the future, they have been considering the purchase of a sewer grinder pump. “I think we probably have time with the current system, it’s never been used before,” Assistant Port Manager Todd Souvenir said. “The challenge with waiting is if something happens, we’re in...

The Wahkiakum PUD Board of Commissioners held a quick meeting on Tuesday morning. Commissioner Bob Jungers asked to have a line item added to next year’s budget to allow for the acquisition of spare high side bushings for the transformer in Cathlamet as well as the new transformer planned for Grays River. “I believe that transformer is going to be designed to be seismic resistant but I would like to make sure that we are able to repair or replace the high side bushings and the risers for tho...
