The fire fighter training exercise last Thursday night was more than just a control burn of a dilapidated old county owned house; it was a night of inspiration as more than 30 volunteer fire fighters converged on the KM to burn down this historical landmark. It may not be a landmark to most; however, it was of particular interest to many who were there. Grays river resident Dan Anderson was there to watch his son-in-law; Robert Maki and his grandson Kevin Maki work on the fire. Dan and his...

To the Eagle: I continue to be amazed and pleased with Cathlamet’s community organizations and volunteers. I went to the Summer Lunch Program meeting at the Community Center last Monday at 1 p.m. I was impressed with the history of the program the last few years and the planning for this year's program. The program is run entirely by donations and volunteers to ensure good nutrition for children and adults in the summer. Good nutrition is essential to our children’s development, learning, health and feeling good. Volunteers are needed for this...

Ruth Doumit, a lifelong resident of Wahkiakum County is Tsuga Gallery's Artist of the Month for May. This Friday, there will be an open house to celebrate Mother's Day, meet Doumit, and see her work. Mother's Day is an appropriate day to celebrate Doumit. The obvious would be to say that she is the mother of three, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. But it would also be important to say that her life and her art acquired an urgency when 25 years ago, she found out she had cancer in a part...
WEATHER--It was pretty nice at the beginning of last week, and then we cooled down a bit, with even a few showers falling here and there, but I was still able to get some flower bed work done, so I hope you got to enjoy the sunny times. This past weekend, we had a warmish Saturday but high clouds and sprinkles started in West Valley by late afternoon, so it wasn't as sunny and nice as some folks were experiencing. Sunday saw us taking turns between sunshine and clouds and quite a cool breeze, while just a few miles down the road, it was sunny...

To The Eagle: Good nutrition is essential for effective learning every day, all year long. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does the need for good nutrition. Summer meal programs help children get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months. For the past two years Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church has taken the lead and served meals to kids and adults during the summer months. Initially they worked under the guidelines of the USDA Summer Food Service Program but found that it wasn’t a goo...

The Wahkiakum Blooms made their debut on Main Street this week with Phase I of their downtown beautification project. This project was started last fall with a brainstorming session to put together a strategic plan to encourage visitors to spend more time downtown creating more activity for local businesses. WET START--As this week begins, it is taking turns being wet and being sunny. It's hard to do a lot of outside things with the "yo-yo" weather, but it beats the steady downpours we'd been having earlier this month. If forecasters are correct, we should be seeing a stretch of dry days this week, like last week, so here's hoping that nice weather prediction comes true. Last week we got up in the 80s, which is unbelievable for April, so we didn't have a lot of time to adjust from the 40's to the 80's and back down again! Unfortunately, on those...

On a day with a limited agenda, citizens in the audience pressed the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners on Tuesday to pursue traffic safety measures on SR 4. The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has been consulting with the county, Town of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum School District about possible changes to speed limits and traffic patterns in the Cathlamet area. The department intends to lower the speed limit in the area to 45 miles per hour this spring to study impacts on traffic. Residents had two traffic accidents in mind:...

An eight week Citizen's Police Academy offered by the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office is halfway over, and participants not only seem to be learning a lot about law enforcement, they sound like they are having fun. Last Friday after a presentation from Washington State Patrol Sergeant Brad Moon on their functions and DUIs, Undersheriff Gary Howell talked about his experience in drug enforcement. Before Moon left, the two talked about how officers determined sobriety, and what the subject had...

A 2014 Ford F350 pickup driven by Niels W. Paulsen, age 84, Centralia, collided with the team van from behind and pushed it into the vehicle in front, causing a chain reaction. Van...
WEEKEND--This past weekened we started out a little damp on Saturday morning after a pretty cloudy, yet dry Friday, but it quickly became real sunny and nice. Saturday night saw temps drop down in the mid-30s, and with clear skies, I was hoping to see the meteor shower but after about 15 minutes of standing outside in the cold, I gave up and my aching neck and I went to bed. Did you see the meteor shower? Sunday began gorgeous and it looks like the whole week will be that way, so here's to enjoying getting our webbed feet dried out at long...
