  • County presents new mental health quarters

    Rick Nelson|Mar 29, 2018

Wahkiakum Health & Human Services is slowly bringing their new quarters, tentatively called the Hope House, into operation. Last summer, the congregation of the United Church of Christ, Congregational, disbanded and donated their church building and parsonage to Health & Human Services so that it would benefit the people of Wahkiakum County. Since then, Health & Human Services has been painting, moving and repositioning. On Tuesday, department staff held an open house to show what they've done...

  • Robots rule at the high school

    Darrell Alexander|Mar 22, 2018

Wahkiakum Wohbot Wohundup robotics tournament was hosted by Wahkiakum School District and Wahkiakum 4-H last Thursday at Wahkiakum High School. There were so many robots, or "bots" as the kids call them, that there was not enough room to show all of them. A few were shared to give an approximate idea of the variety of styles and workmanship that went into constructing these wonderful Wohbots. The entrants were students from second through 12th grades from Cathlamet and high school students from...

  • DOT to study lower SR 4 speed at Cathlamet

    Rick Nelson|Mar 22, 2018

Motorists will soon see a reduced speed limit on SR 4 through Cathlamet. Both the Cathlamet Town Council and Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners agreed to ask the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to lower the speed limit to 35 miles per hour. The move would be part of a long range effort to increase safety along the highway through Cathlamet. Officials from both the town and county have supported proposals for lower speed and other changes to improve safety on SR 4 between the Elochoman Valley and Boege roads intersections....

  • We are getting the shaft from assessor

    Mar 22, 2018

To the Eagle: Every year I feel like I am being railroaded by the Assessor’s office. Last year my property taxes on my then 7-year old manufactured home increased 10 percent from the previous year, this year they increased by yet another 19 percent above last year’s appraisal! Last year, I appealed my appraisal, arguing that manufactured homes (MH) should only depreciate in value, and should never appreciate unless improvements have been made to them. The appeals process appears quite easy at face value. Simply submit the completed pet...

  • Shameful situation

    Mar 22, 2018

To The Eagle: I was shocked to read your AP article emphasizing state official’s total lack of integrity by elected Legislators and our WA attorney general. This bipartisan failure to support and enforce WA constitutional protection brings shame on them all. The singular issue is not important. Those WA officials’ hubris and open willingness to violate legal due process is appalling and paramount. WA senator: “I have incredibly grave concerns that we are creating a convoluted process for getting around a [WA State] constitutional right...

  • Open mic night at Grange Hall Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 22, 2018

NOT SO GREAT--I suppose it depended on where you were, but as this week began, Sunday was definitely on the wet side in West Valley. We did have our dry moments, but for the most part, it was damp. Saturday was a bit better with more sun than rain, so I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the dryness on that day at least. However, the work week began dry after some very thick fog, which kept the ships' horns blowing all night long. Unfortunately the forecast for this week shows more rain than sun, and some very cold temperatues in the...

  • 24th Annual Cathlamet St. Patrick's Day Parade

    Mar 22, 2018

For the past few years our parade has boasted of having more Irish wolfhounds than the Seattle and Portland parades. This year Seattle had 14 wolfhounds, and we had 13 wolfies and one great Dane, so we’ll grudgingly concede a tie. The group marched up and down Main St., Cathlamet and grouped in front of the courthouse. The marchers regrouped for great Irish dinners at Duffy's Pub in Gray's River....

  • Hillary is falling down

    Mar 15, 2018

To The Eagle: What a joy and asset we have here in The Wahkiakum Eagle with our friend, Howard Brawn. He puts the lie to much of the hysteria and mean back biting from our leftist democrat neighbors. When all we readers get is a steady stream of AP handouts and media lies in The Eagle, that's OK. The Daily News isn't any better. Personally, I get my news and opinion from the myriad sources on the internet, both left and right. The Eagle is a fine little town paper. Most of the opinions are amusing. I confess that the suffering democrats are...

  • Happy St. Patrick's Day to one and all

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 15, 2018

GORGEOUS--In spite of some cold nights, the sunshine that shone through my windows on Saturday and Sunday was certainly welcomed! It was even into the 60s, which was a far cry from those cold, wet, windy and nippy 30 and 40 degree temperatures we've been having lately. I hope you got to enjoy the sunshine while it was here, as we all know that after a few of those, the rains return. Hopefully the sunshine will return, as we already mowed the lawn, and we know what happens once you do that, you'll be remowing it after every rain storm, as it...
