Two new surveys will guide services for local adults. The Southwest Washington Area Agency on Aging surveyed 900 people across the region to identify priorities for its 2016-2019 operating plan. Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services conducted its own survey over the past year and collected responses from 46 persons, and those responses mirrored the aging agency's results. The agency's survey came back with four main themes, representative Mike Reardan said Tuesday in reporting to the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners. Those themes we...
To The Eagle: Your coverage of the Town Council’s Beal Street debate was informative. However, my public comment on the issue – a warning about safety and traffic flows near the marina – wasn’t fully reflected in your story. With a large parcel of Town property (the former sewage lagoons) up for redevelopment, the Council should be thinking not only about today’s traffic patterns and usage, but about how Cathlamet’s waterfront might function 10, 20 or 30 years in the future. That isn’t happening. Indeed, the Town has got two related issue...
To The Eagle: I am a local landowner who has lived, worked and paid taxes in Wahkiakum County for most of my life. Cascade Hardwoods is wanting to purchase about 14.4 acres of alder from me. It was proposed to be logged by Olsen Logging and probably hauled by DeBriae. The logging was proposed to be done this summer and to be completed in about a two week period. Cascade Hardwoods request to access the road has been rejected by the school district. The school district wants an access trail built for the students. I’m not sure how many t...
In an article for the website Only in Your State, Seattle cartoonist and writer Nikki Cleveland selected what she considered to be the “Most beautiful, charming small towns in Washington.” Cathlamet ranked 13th on the list, sharing the honor with places like LaConner, Hoodsport, Twisp and Winthrop. “It was actually really tough coming up with a limited list,” Cleveland said. “There are so many small towns around our state and what qualifies as a ‘small town’ is kind of subjective. I grew up in...

The consultant working on the update, the Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) had anticipated being able to do the work without also updating that...
MISERABLE--With temperatures in the triple digits around the area last week, it was just way too hot for some of us! It was great to see some clouds show up beginning on Sunday and they say we may have some cooler temperatures due this whole week, so that's fine by me. Can you believe that officers in Eugene, OR responded to three cases of children being left in cars within a one hour window, and it was at a time when it was reading over 100 degrees outside, which would climb to about 120 in 15 minutes in a car? Please take a look around the...

Jennifer Oxley is learning to make metaphorical lemonade with a crochet hook and a lot of yarn. Oxley, 48, the daughter of George and Barb Silva and the mother of two girls, knows a bit about how an unexpected loss can derail a life along with all the hopes and dreams one gathers along the way. A little over 10 years ago her immune system started shutting down. She had just finished her prerequisites and was in her second semester of the nursing program at LCC. "I was getting bronchitis a lot,"...

To the Eagle: There are several RCWs regulating the amount of taxes which can be levied against properties by the various taxing districts. At the July 21, 2015 meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, two different levy limits were being discussed. I was discussing the 1% increase the county may add each year to the prior year’s levy amount. Assessor Bill Coons was discussing the maximum levy rate the county can have. Commissioner Backman was proposing a “levy lid lift” which is actually a lifting of the “1% lid” otherwise imposed b...
To the Eagle: Our county fair is dying from natural causes, chief among them being the steady geriatrification of our local population and the flight of agricultural enterprise to less restrictive, more profitable shores. There are possibilities for rejuvenation that have been suggested but remain untried. The fairground has unused acreage on the west side and undeveloped waterfront in the northeast corner, giving it the potential for a demolition derby, mud-a-thon, racing events, ox, horse, tractor, and doodlebug pulls, and aquatic activities...
To The Eagle: Our signs for Puget Island and Cathlamet, and even Erikson Park have been redone and they look fabulous! Thank you so much to whomever worked to make these signs look new and beautiful. I smile every time I see one. I especially love the red barn on the Puget Island sign. Kim Sharp Puget Island...
The Town of Cathlamet is replacing the pumps in a sewage lift station located at the foot of TugBoat Alley. The work may disrupt traffic on Broadway Street. The town public works crew has installed a surface line to divert flow to another line leading to the station that pumps the waste water to the treatment plant. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank said that to do this safely, it is necessary to stop the flow at the upstream manhole at the foot of Broadway. The diverted flow is being pumped from there (near Helping Hands Food Bank) to...
THE END--Tomorrow marks the end of yet another month, which just seems impossible! I hope you enjoyed last weekend, which was a little cooler; just fine with me! Supposedly we'll be back to warmer temperatures by the time you read this, so here's hoping you've been dealing with the heat. I heard we could be in for another long stretch of very hot temperatures, so brace yourself for another heat wave! Sadly, more children and more animals have been left in hot cars in other nearby towns and deaths have resulted, which I just find totally...
