  • What would happen if...?

    Dec 13, 2012

To The Eagle:  I realize it is hard to get agreement in any group of people.  But...what would happen if each and every one of us in the USA and perhaps the world over just decided to ignore the governing agencies and went back to taking responsibility for our own lives?  What if people remembered that not too long ago there were no handouts and people made their own way through honesty and hard work? Yes, I realize there were dishonest people and they were tolerated to a point then the vigilance committee met and the person was...

  • Clothing bank seeks clean, usable items

    Dec 13, 2012

To The Eagle:  This has been a bittersweet year for the Cathlamet Seventh-day Adventist Clothing Bank. We have received more donations than ever, the sweet, and we have received more donations than ever, the bitter. Let me clarify this.  The sweet has several parts. First, what a wonderful, generous community Cathlamet is and has been. Secondly, most of the clothing has been clean, sorted and folded, which makes the clothing bank run smoothly. And lastly, it has been a joy to meet, visit, and laugh and talk with you about our...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Dec 6, 2012

Volunteers working on the drainage project between the horse barn and arena, in spite of the weather, are making some good progress. One ditch was dug, four catch basins set in place and 100 feet of four inch pipe laid out. The pipes and basins are connected, most of the ditch is filled back in and the pipe that is in place is helping to drain the inches of rain we keep receiving each day. It’s not fun to work in the type of weather that you have to wear rain gear all the time, but if you want to complete any projects this time of year, y...

  • Many holiday happenings ahead

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

DECENT--It was nice to see some dry weather last weekend after the downpours we experienced previously. It seems our county had its share of flooding, rock slides and miserable conditions last week to deal with, so a spurt of sunshine and fair weather was a welcome relief. On Monday morning our temperatures in West Valley were down in the 20s and things were frosty white. It looks like winter is coming, so we can't be too fooled by the sunshine of the day. Of course, that's not supposed to last long with things warming up and rains returning....

  • PUD reviews water system expansion costs

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

High water may have prevented Wahkiakum PUD commissioners from meeting in Rosburg on November 20, but it did not prevent them from discussing possible expansion of the Western Wahkiakum Water System. Meeting at the PUD’s Cathlamet headquarters, Manager Dave Tramblie reported to the commissioners on information he’d gathered to assess the potential of expanding the water system. He estimated $50,000 in out-of-pocket costs for materials. For the section of the expansion between Salmon Creek Road and Salme Road, a distance of almost a mile, the...

  • Share the bounty this Thanksgiving

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 22, 2012

WET & BREEZY--The weather forecasters said we might get some nasty weather and by golly, it did get quite blustery wet, so it was a good weekend to sit by the fire for sure. I'm not sure if you had the thunder at your house, but in the wee hours of Sunday morning, it absolutely roared, crashed and banged out here in West Valley. It looks to be a soggy Thanksgiving holiday as well, so I hope all of you that are traveling the roadways are turning those lights on, slowing down in the rain and arriving at your destination all safe and sound! • Storm wallops region

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 22, 2012

A winter storm that packed hurricane force winds and dumped five inches or more of rain hit the lower Columbia River region Sunday and Monday. The heavy rains brought flooding to the Grays River Valley on Monday and led to landslides that closed SR 4 in several places Monday afternoon between Cathlamet and Longview. The National Weather Service reported a gust of wind of 104 miles per hour was recorded on Naselle Ridge. Wind gusts tipped a semi trailer on the Astoria-Megler Bridge Monday morning, and the bridge was closed most of the day....
