To The Eagle: In the April 21 issue of The Eagle, Dale and Sylvia Costich voiced complaints about the county's response to the Japanese tsunami. It is interesting to note that when a public hot wash, (a discussion of the event and the response to it,) was held, neither were present to voice their concerns. They speak of the county's Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) and specify items that should be in it as well as identifying what responders should do when responding. The plan is a comprehensive, all-hazards plan covering any...

SUN!--As this week began, the area saw some sunshine, that was the good part. The bad part was that it was below freezing a couple of nights in our area and other parts of the state. Some even saw snow! It was great to see the sun shining, and I know folks were busy mowing their lawns and washing their cars, but the temperatures sure could have been warmer. With some areas back east expecting over a foot of snow this week and over 200 tornadoes tearing through the south and killing dozens of people last weekend, I guess we shouldn't complain...

He retired as an area manager for US West, where he was headquartered in Spokane a...
To The Eagle: It appears more and more that the State of Washington is attempting to balance the budget on the backs of home and property owners by attempting to hold the line on the over assessed homes and property that are appraised at 25-50 percent over their 2011 market value. The valuation is depending on whether it is a home or property and its location. Many of the properties were assessed higher than their market value at the peak of the market in 2007. Today the values have dropped 25-50 percent. The state is attempting to hold the...

The Mules took advantage of smart base running and numerous Comet errors as they sent the Comets packing with a 15-1 defeat last Friday in Cathlamet. Defense was a chore for the Comets as they committed eight errors that led to many of the Mules’ runs. However, the Mules did their part at the plate as well, tallying 12 hits and swiping a ridiculous 17 bases. The Mules also took advantage of five walks and three hit batters. Brandon Fudge led the charge offensively, going three for four with a double, three runs batted in, three stolen bases and...
DIFFERENT DAYS--As the week began, it was absolutely miserable in West Valley, with rain coming down so hard on Sunday night that I wondered if I should be building an ark! However, it was great to see the work week begin with sunshine, as Monday was great, albeit windy, but that's okay, as at least we were able to let things dry out a little bit and the wind sometimes helps that happen a little faster. With a couple of nice days to follow, we are all quite pleased as the grass seems to grow faster than we can get the lawn mower filled up, so...

GRAY START--As this week begins, it's gray but dry and I woke to temperatures in the 30s. This is Spring? They say we're going to get lots of rain and by the end of the week it will be below freezing, so obviously Old Man Winter has not let go of his cold and miserable grip on us just yet. On Saturday we were even dodging heavy hail storms, between some sun breaks, so we had a bit of everything. SPECIAL DAYS--It seems I looked at the wrong month and got some dates mixed up last week so if you see a repeat of names this week, you'll understand...

This year, the WHS Key Club--a high school affiliate of Kiwanis--approached the Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet for support in organizing gift teddy bear sponsorships, brace...
State Route 4 will remain closed just west of Stella until early next week while crews stabilize a slope threatening to slide onto the highway. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) closed the highway Tuesday morning after 200 cubic yards of mud and debris flowed onto the roadway and blocked both lanes of traffic. The slide occurred at the end of an open bluff section and took out a 25-foot wide section of chain link netting WSDOT had placed along the bluff to control rockfalls. In another section, a stump is hung up in the...
