Students at J.A. Wendt Elementary are collecting old cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Two businesses will compete with the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce in this Friday's Punkin Chunkin' challenge as part of the Oktoberfest celebrations. Terry Barnes Grambo of Financial Network and her husband Roger, and Rob and Diane Stockhouse of Stockhouse's Farm will both build pumpkin chuckers to challenge the Chamber's Funnelator. Wahkiakum PUD commissioners reviewed water rights applications, talks with the town, and their disconnect policy at their meeting on September 21. Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz has ordered a selective spending freeze in response to an anticipated budget shortfall for 2010, and some department heads aren't happy. Wehrfritz said Monday it appears the town's general fund will be about $41,000 short of its expected revenue for 2010 because of declines in sales tax receipts and other taxes which are suffering in the national recession. As I walked around the fairgrounds this year I noticed there were people I didn’t know at our Fair. We also gave out many new exhibitor numbers. Cathlamet officials learned this week that their grant application to the state Recreation and Conservation Office received a low ranking and likely won't be funded. The grant would have gone for work on the proposed Queen Sally Park project. "We ranked 49th on the funding list," said Mayor George Wehrfritz. "The lowest down that list the RCO has ever gone is 42. The Longview based band Diamond Rio is planning a tribute for the late Hadley Caliman this Sunday at The Carousel Restaurant in Longview. Band member Willis Moss said the tribute will be part of a 5:30 p.m. dinner show at the restaurant. The band will have a blues show on Sunday. After spending three hours discussing the latest draft of an update to the Cathlamet zoning ordinance, members of the town council and planning commission agreed Tuesday that a new start is needed. Meeting in a special meeting for a workshop, planners and councilors agreed that the latest version, known as Cathlamet Municipal Code Chapter 18A had too many problems to fix easily. On September 11, an exhibit of quilts by the River City Strippers - a Wahkiakum County based quilters group - will open at Redmen Hall. This will be a celebration of their 10th anniversary as a group, having started with 11 members in February 2000, and now grown to just over 40 quilters. They meet weekly in Cathlamet and have become well known for the Comfort Quilts they make and donate to seriously ill children and adults in local hospitals. They will be showing over 80 pieces of their work from quilts to bags, clothing and smaller items....
Former Long Beach resident Ken Lentz, 72, died in Cathlamet on September 1, 2010. The son of Walter and Clara (Halsey) Lentz, he was born in Oak Grove, Mo, on June 19, 1938. He lived in southern California for a time before moving to Skamokawa to be near family. There he worked in the woods and married Judy Heagy. They had a son, Curtis. Later the couple moved to Kansas City, Mo. where Ken was employed as an iron worker in construction. In 1965 he returned to the local area where he again worked in the woods and fished commercially out of...
Jerrold Samuel Florek, 51, of Cathlamet, passed away September 3, 2010 as the result of a logging accident. He was born August 4, 1959 to Joseph, Sr. and Corliss (Sotka) Florek in Longview. Jerrold attended school in Cathlamet and graduated in 1977 from Wahkiakum High School. He worked as a timber faller, starting the profession when he was 15 years old. He spent two and a half years working as a roughneck in the Oklahoma Oil fields in the early 1980s. He traveled to New Zealand 20 years ago to work as a timber faller there for six months and...
