The third group to take the stage were candidates for prosecuting attorney and sheriff. The two candidates for sheriff were incumbent Mark Howie (I) and challenger, Graham Phalen (R). Here is what they had to say: Phalen: Howdy neighbors. My name is Graham Phalen. I’m a resident of the island for the p...

With all the dry weather I hope everyone is taking extra care with possible fires. It can be something as innocent as a cigarette butt, a piece of glass in dry tinder or a spark from a brush hog hitting a rock. Be safe out there, and be extra careful. Our animals need extra looking after in these hot days as well, so just a reminder, leave lots of fresh water for them and give them shelter out of the heat. News from Naselle: The Finnish-American Folk Festival is again being held in Naselle on July 27, 28 and 29. Bring the whole family and...

Home again and loving it. This trip added nearly 7,000 miles to my car’s odometer, and I have gained a new housemate. My brother Dave is here to stay, and my sister and I are very happy to have him. We drove back to Floodwood, Minn., visited Duluth and Lake Superior, got his essentials packed up into a U-Haul truck (we packed as he has had a recent hip replacement) and drove through some beautiful country both ways, but none as beautiful as here. As most of you know by now, I love home. Wahkiakum County has one more, happy resident for the c...

The Naselle High School Class of 2018 finished their last assignment on Saturday, sitting through speeches, and collecting scholarships and most importantly, their diplomas. Valedictorian Samanta "Mayrel" Franco Monroy, though young, had wisdom to share with her classmates, and students still in school. "It doesn't matter what you say, it only matters what you do," she said. "Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance you must keep moving. I know things will work out if you work hard....

I escaped the heat and traffic of good old California, with my niece and great niece last Sunday and arrived to cooler and damper surroundings that evening. It started raining off and on in Eugene but stopped as we arrived in Grays River. It is so good to be home. It was a busy few weeks, but this proud grandmother wouldn’t have missed the three graduations and one promotion to high school for the world. Oh yes, and a 50th birthday for my son. I guess I should start feeling old, but I’m just not ready for that yet. Though I am home, it is onl...
Naselle High School will hold its graduation ceremony this Saturday, 4 p.m. Samanta "Mayrel" Franco Monroy is the valedictorian for Naselle's Class of 2018. It's a praiseworthy achievement. What makes it even more remarkable is that three and a half years ago, she didn't speak English. "It was so hard for me to understand anything," Monroy said. "I took extra time to study. For the most part, I read books and watched TV." Music and movies with subtitles were a great help too. Now she speaks...
To The Eagle: I came to this area in 2003. I learned a lot in my first years as a newcomer, so I thought I’d share a few things with any new folks who have moved here recently. First, it’s important to realize you’ve come into a Scandinavian culture with Finnish folks in Naselle, Swedish and Finnish in Grays River, and Norwegian on Puget Island. There are other heritages as well, of course, but the Scandinavian heritage is very strong here. These are hardworking, honest, kind and intelligent folk who may not appear overly friendly at first...
