Are you ready for that extra hour of daylight? Remember to spring forward on the 12th and set your clock ahead one hour. Mother Nature has certainly been showing her indecision on the weather this past week or so. We have had it all, from snow, to hail, to rain and wind, thundershowers and some beautiful sunshine with rainbows. Ahhh, living in the Northwest. News from Naselle: Spring sports are here. This week’s calendar for the Naselle Comet teams includes: Saturday, baseball with Wahkiakum in Naselle at 4 p.m.; Wednesday, fastpitch with I...

It’s hard to tell whether Mother Nature wants it to be Spring or remain Winter. One day sun, then rain and snow. Last Saturday was a gorgeous day, and my sister happened to have the day off, so we decided to have lunch at the Grays River Cafe. After a yummy cheeseburger, we took a drive out Altoona-Pillar Rock Road. We drove some distance and spotted a car parked on the side of the road. As we approached, we noticed three unusual animal buddies coming towards the two guys next to their car. It was a friendly little brown and white goat (who c...

MUCH DIFFERENT--This past weekend we saw some sunshine and much more pleasant conditions than the last one. No white stuff, yeah! It was nice to catch a break after all the snow and rain, which led to road closures and tons of trees coming down, so a huge relief there. Many parts of the county still have plenty of water standing around however, so I'm pretty sure they are not looking for the rains to return, which should be by the time you read this. Let's hope it's not much. As this work week begins however, it's clear skies and sunshine, but...

I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoyed that beautiful day of sunshine on Monday. My dogs were in heaven as we walked for about two hours in the woods and of course had to stop a few times so they could take a dip in all three creeks. Mice are easier to catch after the water goes down in the flooded fields, so they enjoyed quite a few snacks as well. Hopefully we will see more of that kind of weather soon. Even though I love the rain, I’m not so partial to the five inches of silt that gets deposited on my driveway, or the mess it mak...

According to Mike Crouse, this story has been told a hundred times. There is a siren song on the river. Crouse heard it when he was a child in Skamokawa. In a home separated from the Columbia River by a white-tailed deer refuge, he knew when the commercial fishermen went out, because he could hear the music of their boats, even from that distance. These days he can name the gillnetters from the distinct rhythm and melody of their motors. What he hears is a call. "I gotta get out there," he...
To the Eagle: It was fine to see the front page of the Ground Hog's Day edition dominated by literary matters. Diana Zimmerman did a fine job reporting on poetry and libraries in the county, as she does on so many stories. We are very fortunate to have her on your staff. As to the poetry, I was frustrated to read the announcement of the state's new poet laureate, Tod Marshall, reading in Cathlamet only on the very day of the event the previous week, and then to read in Diana's report that the audience was small. I might have missed it in an...

Snow, snow and a little more snow. It was beautiful to look at, but treacherous to drive in for many. Lots of trees and big branches down which also caused some distraction for a few. I would like to say a huge thank you to our county crews for all their hard work and for probably losing a bit of sleep in order to keep things running smooth. I know I won’t drive in it if I don’t have to, but many folks have to get to work, and without your crews keeping the roads clear, that would not be possible. Thank you. News from Naselle: Sports cal...
By Diana Zimmerman Naselle basketball teams are headed to postseason play in the 1B division. The Comettes took first place in the Coastal 1B league. They finished the regular season 12-0 in league, and 15-5 overall. They are currently ranked 23rd in the WIAA RPI. Their first place league finish bought them a bye for the first round of district play. They face the winner of the Mary M. Knight/Columbia Adventist game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in Castle Rock. The boys took second place in the...
“We worked so hard. We felt so proud that we were able to do this community center. I thought of it as a legacy. They are just dismantling all the work we did instead of focusing on other things that needed to be done.” —Penny Gregory, former Johnson Park board member By Diana Zimmerman A rift at Johnson Park may eventually be a double blessing to the Westend community. There may soon be two free libraries, both largely possible because of Trudy Fredrickson. When Fredrickson and the new Johns...
