  • Youth camp closure impacts our community

    Mar 31, 2022

Commentary by Karen Bertroch The town hall meeting about the planned closure of the Naselle Youth Camp held March 17 gave the group that attended a sense of the latest reality of what’s happening as the deadline for the governor’s signature that would stop the camp’s coming closure gets closer. An excellent article in The Chinook Observer gave the readers plenty of data. The number of employees, the amount of money lost, the loss of economic life for both western Wahkiakum and eastern Pacific counties was laid out in dollars receding from...

Photos by Todd Wilson The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team suffered a couple more losses this week, bringing their overall record to 0-6, but the coach sees a lot of promise for a young team that is willing to work hard, and "carry the load." Last Thursday, the Mules lost 19-7 to Adna. "This was a great game through five innings," Coach Garrett Radcliffe said. "The Mules simply ran out of arms. Zakk Carlson was in the line-up to start pitching for the Mules but was scratched during warm ups due to...

The Lumberjills took the game, 13-9. On Thursday, (today), the Lady Mules will travel to Morton/White Pass and t...

    Mar 24, 2022

Analysis By Karen Bertroch Naselle/Grays River Valley school board: Naselle, small that it may be, is a center of transition this spring. Two events last week gave us clear signs of change in our small area of Southwest Washington. In the past, Naselle/Grays River Valley’s School Board has often met with only two to five people attending from the public. For the past six months, a group of parents has been attending who want change in the way schools are led and decisions made. At the last b...

  • Good idea to change smoke alarm batteries

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 17, 2022

BIT DRIPPY--After a very nice sunny start this past Saturday, the rain front moved in by about two that afternoon and then we got a soaking that evening; at least West Valley did! Waking up to more gloomy, wet weather on Sunday morning, after losing an hour of sleep, was all the more reason to cozy up by the fire and either read a book or watch a little NASCAR in the afternoon. Whatever you did, I hope you’ve prepared yourself for a damp week as there are raindrops in the forecast for every day; although, that doesn’t mean rain all day, so if...

  • Performers bring classical music moment to Naselle

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 10, 2022

One might think that because we live in a rural, out of the way community that most visitors just drive through, we have to leave the area to enjoy extraordinary musical talent. A recent concert cleared up any misunderstandings by proving that is not the case for those of us living here. One of those moments when an audience could be transported to "another place" is in the music played with magic and skill last Saturday. "Transported" was the universal response to the team of two women, Kim...

  • Legislature considering converting youth camp into outdoor school

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 3, 2022

Recently, it was announced that the Naselle Youth Camp will be closed as of June 30, 2023, with State of Washington considering a proposal to convert the camp property and facilities to an outdoor education center. After calling two locations in Olympia Tuesday morning, it is most accurate to say any decisions regarding closing the camp appear to be in limbo because the House of Representatives pulled it out of their budget. Also, it appears the proposal has been dropped from the Senate’s budget. However, negotiations will start soon with m...
