Stories bring us together: I talked with Gail Wirkkala this morning. She called from Longview to give me information on the Rosie Nelson Johnson story that was in the April 21 issue. Rosie talked about the Shamrock Hotel in Deep River. Gail told me that the original story came from Marlene Wirkkala Wiitala. Robotic teams from Wahkiakum High School and Naselle High School got some exciting news when they learned they were headed to Maryland in June for an international underwater robotics competition after qualifying at a regional event at the Cathlamet Pool on Friday. A very happy group of students introduced themselves to the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors on Tuesday. All 16 members of the robotics club, lead by volunteer Ron Wright, are headed to the east coast in June to compete in an international underwater robotic competition after one of their teams took first place in a qualifying event at the Cathlamet pool on Friday. The Wahkiakum Mules joined six other teams at Toutle Lake for a league track meet last Thursday. The Mules took second place in boys’ competition with 70.5 points, while the Lady Mules took sixth place in girls’ competition with 32 points. Janessa Tarabochia, a 9th grader at Wahkiakum High School was the winner of the 38th annual art contest for the Great White Tail Run. Falon Hoven, Wahkiakum County deputy assessor/appraiser, this week announced she would be a candidate for county assessor in this year's election. A Wahkiakum High School graduate, she earned a bachelor degree at Washington State University. After graduating, she began working as director for the Appelo Archives Center in Naselle.
