There has been a kind of cycle of expansion and contraction at the Little Island Creamery in recent years, as the owners and their employees have sought to define and refine their mission, their dreams, and ultimately their future on Puget Island. The new Little Island Kitchen and Meeting Rooms is just one more manifestation of their endeavor. Intially, owner Dick McDonald and his sister, Kathleen, planned to build a store on the property to sell their cheeses and butter, as well as other...

The 2022 session of the Washington State Legislature opened Jan. 10 with legislators saying they want to help strengthen economic well being, manage COVID-19 risks, provide help with childcare, housing, and mental health support and mitigate the effects of climate change. One thing both parties agree on: The state appears to have plenty of money to address real needs, thanks to a remaining $1 billion in pandemic relief from the federal government and a booming Washington economy. Rep. J.T Wilcox, R-Yelm, said he thinks some of that money...
Wahkiakum County commissioners gave tentative approval of adding an epidemiologist to the county health department staff and discussed hunting seasons and wildlife herd issues with regional state fish and wildlife officials when they met Tuesday. Commissioners and Health and Human Services Department Director Chris Bischoff said they've been surprised by reaction to the potential arrival of an epidemiologist. The position, Bischoff said, will involve research and project development and won't have any mandatory authority. In discussions with...

"[The year] 2022 starts with a new mayor and council me...

There are two crews working four plows, with one spare ready to go: one crew on th...
On Nov. 4, the US Coast Guard and Washington Department of Ecology were notified of localized oiled vegetation on the Deep River. After an initial investigation, it was determined that the oil originated from an abandoned barge measuring 15 by 40 feet, tied up to the shoreline near private property. It is not clear when the barge was abandoned, and the owner of the barge has not been identified. The barge contained 1,600 gallons of heavy black oil. A unified command composed of Coast Guard and...

Commissioners of Port District 2 may alter their commissioner district boundaries when they meet in January. Local governmental entities have been considering changing their boundaries based on population shifts shown in the 2020 US Census. The principle is to have districts with nearly even population numbers so that each person's vote carries the same weight. Commissioners of Port District 1 have voted to change their district boundaries (see story in Dec. 16 edition of The Eagle). Governing...

Photos and story by Karen Bertroch Okie's Market in Naselle recently replaced their old refrigeration and freezer cases with large, new ones. The old cases were often out of order and the ice cream was certainly not hard. The new produce area is twice as large as the old one and the new cases have many shelves with plenty of room for organic fruit and vegetables. Another advantage is the increased lighting inside the cases. The ice cream area is much larger with many more flavors and brands to...
On Dec. 21, the Naselle Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors meeting began at exactly 6:30 p.m. with a pledge of allegiance. Three community members and one Eagle correspondent attended. All the board members were present along with two staff members. The consent agenda was adopted quickly, then came time for public comment. However, no one spoke. The next item was board reorganization with the current board being recognized as officers: Chuck Hendrickson as president, Amy Hunter as vice-chair. Hunt suggested someone else be...

The council may call for bids again in 2022. Planned work included improvements to siding and installation of lighting and a...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday headed into the Christmas holiday on a happy note. Thanks to Treasurer Tammy Peterson, the county will save around $186,000 in interest payments on a $1 million loan used to finance recent renovation of the courthouse HVAC system. Peterson told the board of commissioners that when she reviewed terms of the loan, she wondered if it could be paid off early. When she investigated, she learned of the potential savings on interest payments. The county has the funds to pay off the loan, she said, so she...

In November, the Washington Department of Ecology received a report that an old barge was leaking oil into Deep River, and agencies came together to respond. Last week the derelict barge was moved to the Oneida Boat Ramp. The move required a large crane that lifted the barge up enough to get it onto the shore at the boat launch site. A truck has been there for several days pumping oil/gas out of the barge. All the oil/gas waste will be moved to a recycling process location and the metal from...
