The first lure coursing event of the season will take place this weekend, Saturday & Sunday, May 10 and 11, at Misty Rivers Plantation, 117 Cross Dike Road, on Puget Island. This event is sponsored by the Willamette Valley Basenji Club and sanctioned by the AKC. Racing starts each morning around 9 a.m., and runs until completion, which is generally mid afternoon. The sportfishing season for spring chinook salmon on the lower Columbia River will reopen for two days this week under an agreement reached Tuesday by fishery managers from Washington and Oregon. Under that agreement, anglers can catch and keep one marked, hatchery chinook salmon Friday and Saturday as part of their daily catch limit from the Tongue Point/Rocky Point line upriver to Rooster Rock. Wahkiakum Mule basketball player Shane Souvenir has been honored for his outstanding performance this past season. Souvenir, who moved into the post position for the first time this year, was a statistical leader in the Lower Columbia area. He averaged 22.5 points, 11 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game.
