SOME DAMPNESS--Our past weekend was pretty nice, after thick fog in the morning hours. A couple days prior to that though, we had some "heavy mist" here and I thought that was just great! Not everybody got damp like we did west of Skamokawa, but hey, I'll gladly take any moisture that comes our way these days. This week's forecast is for some pretty decent days with a few clouds but warming up by the time you read this. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept. 2-8 are Quin Bassi, Tristan Collupy, Glenn Wiest, Kathy McNally, Chuck...

We enjoyed visiting with so many we hadn't seen for a long while. Carol was dearly loved and will be missed." Robert Pyle was invited...

  • Wahkiakum students begin September 1

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 26, 2021

COOLER--We have started out this week with some morning drizzle, which was nice to settle the dust for a bit and give the leaf feeding plants a little moisture, so that was great. However, it's usually back to dryness by noon and depending on where you were, it was either "mostly cloudy" or "mostly sunny" as we all know that the weather from Skamokawa to Cathlamet can be completely different on any given day! If weather models hold up, the weekend may actually be sunnier and warmer, so I'm sure that would be great for all of those trying to get...

Dear Readers: Good morning. Have you poured a cup of coffee to read the paper? I can't start my day without it. We sure had a busy, fun weekend. Great to have the fair open again. The Loggers Reunion went well. But I feel fall coming in the mornings making it chilly for me to drink my coffee on the back porch. Ben, my dog, likes it when I start the day out there with him. And I like being out there. Cold mornings mean I can't hear the morning radio on KMUN through the open door. Bummer....

  • 2021 Horse Gaming Series

    Valerie Antijunti|Aug 26, 2021

It has been two years since our last show, due to covid. It was so nice to see everyone again. We had a very nice turnout of 16 riders. Nine of those riders also rode in the 50/50 Texas Barrels jackpot. To have 16 riders when there were two other shows going on the same day was very good indeed. As it was set up this year you had to ride in all five shows to qualify for the series high point award. Because we had no riders in the Pee-wee class and also no riders in the 36 and over class, those riders will just have to ride in the next four...

  • See you at the 113th Wahkiakum Co. Fair

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 19, 2021

COOLER/WET?--According to the forecast, we may actually see some showers this week but as of Monday morning, it was just cloudy, but drizzle Tuesday morning was a possibility. We'll also have to wait and see if the Friday forecast for 30 percent chance of drizzle comes true, and considering it's Fair time, well, we almost expect it! You see, it's sort of a running joke with all us locals as it can be dry for weeks and months on end but come Fair time, well, we wind up with some rain! Not always of course, but about 9 out of 10 times, I'd say...

Dear Readers: Last week's obituaries made me pause and reflect. Chuck Parker, Liz Goodfellow Sears, and Ken Kandoll. All meant so much to the area and all ended good, meaningful lives after doing so much for others. If you're looking for something to help you pause and reflect, may I suggest you get a copy of this poetry book, Skyfixer, or borrow it from the Appelo Archives Library? If you have not been to the second-floor library, how about spending an afternoon there? You'll find book...

  • Skamokawa church has closed its doors

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 12, 2021

DAMPNESS/HEAT--As this new week begins, we are enjoying a mild, dry day after a pretty good soaking on Saturday. Here in West Valley, it was a nice steady mist which lasted most of the day and I was very thankful for that. However, temperatures are on the rise again and it could bring temperatures back up into those dangerous mid-90s or higher range, so I hope everyone has prepared themselves for that. Please keep yourself and all your critters hydrated and remember, the sun is not your friend if you're out in it very long, even with...

SR 4 is a pain. We all agree on that. I know using SR 4 for jobs and appointments is a pain. Trying to keep to a schedule can be brutal, but the DOT has to work on highways within a certain summer time frame. I guess the issue is understanding we're all in the same boat. I take the ferry, drive HWY 30 to the Longview bridge and "cross over the bridge," as the old song says. Let's all be as patient as we can! Photo of the Week: For those new to the area, logging trucks may sometimes be annoying,...

State officials ask you to check trees, lights, outdoor equipment and standing water in your yard for harmful bugs as part of National Tree Check Month in August. “August is the ideal time to look for invasive insects and report any species that seem out of place,” said Justin Bush, executive coordinator of the Washington Invasive Species Council. “Trees, lights and standing water such as pools, dog bowls, buckets, birdbaths, etc., near homes are great places to look for insects. Trees provide natural...
