Changes in the Westend: Only Time Will Tell It took over a thousand years of migration from western Asia to Egypt by the Hyksos (Shepherd Kings) to become the ruling majority and establish the 15th dynasty in Egypt from 1650-1550 BCE. This slow, progressive change would not even be noticed over time. Many of the Native American languages of the United States have all but disappeared with English becoming the dominant language. Much could be said of Wahkiakum and Pacific Counties. Finnish immigration was at its zenith during the years 1870-1930...

  • Ten Saturdays left before Christmas

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 15, 2020

NOT SO NICE--This past Saturday night was really a wild one out here in West Valley, with thunder and lightning and windy conditions hitting us late that night and into early Sunday morning.Crazy times and loud too! Some neighboring fields turned into lakes once again, so at least the ducks seemed happy with the overnight changes. Then along came Sunday night. That was wild as well, but this time, multiple trees came down and we had power outages everywhere it seemed! Ours was out for over seven hours, but it depended on where you were as to...

The Quilomene is one of the state’s largest bighorn sheep herds, numbering between 220 and 250. WDFW biologists anticipate having to lethally remove 15 sheep, and test 10 to 15 additional animals using non-lethal means, to assess if the herd is infected. Rights of a Photographer We live in a society today where there are cameras everywhere. Cameras are so prolific that we take them for granted. While teaching a political science class at a mid-west college I gave an assignment to the class that was a real wake up call for the majority of these undergrad students. The assignment was to look for all cameras that are in plain sight from when they leave the classroom until they returned home. They were astounded to learn that they were on surveillance cameras for almost the entire time. Why then...

Suzanne Holmes, President, Pioneer Community Assoc.|Oct 15, 2020

“If your eyes can see a problem and your mouth can talk about it, then it’s time to get your head, heart, and hands busy working to solve it.” Don’t bother googling to see who said this, it was by my grandmother, and my guess is that we all have heard variations of this admonition from our wise elders. She strongly believed that our actions were more important than our words and that our actions in service to others were the most important of all. Perhaps the most famous call to service for me was issued on January 20, 1961, when newly elected...

  • Local radio club passes Emcomm test

    Ron Wright|Oct 8, 2020

Submitted by Ron Wright How well could we talk to each other during an emergency if all of the cell phone towers were down, land-lines were broken, no internet, and no power? That was the question the Wahkiakum County Amateur Radio Club set out to answer last Saturday October 3. In that scenario, we would expect most people would go to one of our county's seven fire halls or to one of the other gathering locations (Johnson Park or Wahkiakum High School), or to a high ground location in the...

  • Sons of Norway to meet October 7

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 1, 2020

NICE ONE--This week started out with blue sky and sunshine and according to forecasters, it is supposed to be nice all week long. That means September will end with sunshine and October will begin with sunshine and very warm temperatures, so that's a real surprise; a nice one though! With some folks planning special events this weekend, it will certainly be appreciated. However, those 80 degree temperatures (if they happen) certainly don't seem like football weather. I am just hoping that the wildfire smoke doesn't make a return like some...
