The Longview Gingerbread Haus Contest is back for the 8th year, and organizers are hoping for a surge of entries to re-energize the Dec. 7 event. Held downtown every year on the first Saturday of December – the same day as the Longview Christmas Parade, the contest received only four entries in 2018. Organizers attribute that to not enough advance publicity about last year’s contest, and so this year Gingerbread Haus Headquarters is getting the word out early to give bakers ample time to plan, bake and decorate. The contest will be held Sat...

"Kyle Hurley's FFA students helped run the different stations and did a great job interacting with all of the kids. It's so much fun to see 'littles and bigs' work and learn together." There were three stations at this year's festival: a straw bale obstacle course, seed grinding, and an apple press. Photos courtesy of Nikki...

WET AND SOGGY--As we came to the end of the third week in October, we definitely got some wet weather, which not only started forming "lakes" where they didn't belong, but also caused a slide along SR 4, which are pretty much the "norm" for us during these rainy times, so I do hope you are mindful of that. If you've traveled that road for years and never had to take a short cut, or never missed an appointment or never had any issues at all, well, you are definitely blessed with good luck, as most of us have experienced one problem or another...
Appelo Archives Harvest Auction Karl Arthur Appelö (he changed his name to Carl) was born on February 17, 1890 in the parish of Sideby on the western coast of Finland into a Swedish-Finn family. Although the farm was located on a small island before the coastal land rose to its current level to the coast of Sweden, the word "Appelö" means "Apple Island" in Swedish. A mixture of circumstances in Finland a century ago forced many of its people to leave their native land. This happened to Carl A...

Fall is here, and Washington's black bears are stocking up fat reserves for winter hibernation. Black bears are opportunistic when it comes to finding food and tend to select foods with the highest number of calories, which can bring them into proximity with people. Officials concede that watching a bear can be an awe-inspiring experience, but warn residents to avoid attracting them to their homes. "Do everything you can to avoid an encounter with any bear, which help to keep them, and you, out of harm's way," said Rich Beausoleil, WDFW...

MID-MONTH--We had some chilly weather at the end of last week but had some sunshine, so that was nice. Saturday was decent until some rain in the evening hours, but that didn't last long, so Sunday may have been cloudy but it was decent. We may be in for a very wet few days this week, along with some gusty winds, so if that happens, I hope you are prepared for the worst, and we'll hope for the best. Here's hoping you were able to get all your outdoor chores done on a couple of those nice, dry days that we had. THINKING OF THEM--There have been...
Invasive Species My late father was an outdoorsman typical of many who live in the Pacific Northwest. He loved to hunt and fish or just go hiking in the woods. As a child he made me very aware of the plants around us and their various uses. He would tell me what could be eaten and what certain plants such as poison oak would do to you if you used it as a toiletry item. Such knowledge stayed with me through my brief military career which further enhanced my curiosity about plants. I never became...
