Friends of Skamokawa will present an upcoming art exhibit featuring artist Beth Bailey, a talented artist from Longview whose primary mediums of choice are pen & ink, watercolor, acrylics, and printmaking. On September 25 at 6:00 p.m., Teresa Bergman, owner of Cowlitz River Dahlias will talk about how to grow dahlias successfully. She will discuss the different forms of dahlias, how to divide them, storing them and planting techniques. Scientists with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will fly a drone over a section of the Elochoman River in Wahkiakum County during the week of Sept. 24 to collect information to support river restoration work. WDFW scientist Jane Atha said a drone would collect imagery at the Elochoman River hatchery, where the agency recently removed the lower weir and fishway from the river. The agency will also collect imagery of a portion of the river along and upstream from the hatchery property to assess restoration opportunities....
DAMPNESS--We began this past weekend with just a slight bit of wetness falling, and while it wasn't much, it was most welcome. We managed to dry out again on Sunday but then we got some more rain drops on Monday, which really soaked things pretty good. I have been told a few times to be careful what you wish for, but I have really been wishing and hoping for rain as my well was nearly dry. Bunker Hill Cemetery Association, Stella Historical Society and the Cowlitz County Historical Museum invite the public to experience history as it comes to life in a unique and fascinating way. Bunker Hill Cemetery graves date back to the 1870s. The people were loggers, farmers, teachers and early settlers of the Stella and surrounding area. Wahkiakum Superintendent Brent Freeman met Senator John McCain while serving as a Naval Attache in Vietnam. McCain, who can be seen here with Freeman and Freeman's daughter, Kiana, died August 25. GORGEOUS--As we started the week, which was in the midst of our three day Labor Day weekend, it was truly gorgeous out! You can't beat blue skies, sunshine and mid-70s temperatures, which are just a perfect equation I think, as it's nice but not too hot! I will say that you can feel "Fall in the air" however, as evening temperatures are in the mid-40s and it's just a bit nippy in the early morning hours. The sturgeon retention season set in the Columbia River upstream from Wauna powerlines to Bonneville Dam and all adjacent tributaries allows a limited white sturgeon retention fishery in the Lower Columbia River. White sturgeon from 44-inches minimum to 50-inches maximum fork length may be retained. Effective dates are Saturdays, September 15 and 22. Owners of the River Mile 38 Brewery in Cathlamet this week announced its sale to two new area residents. The new owners will be Rex Czuba and Javier Sanchez.
