The School Club Roundup is a contest in February among schools across the country each trying to contact via radio as many other schools as possible. The results were just published this week: Our high school radio club with support from the Wahkiakum Amateur Radio Club (N7WAH) placed 13th overall amongst high schools. The N7WAH club provided the equipment for the Amateur Radio station located in the Tech room as Wahkiakum High School. It is so good to be home where I belong after a two-week absence, and the more trips I take away from this wonderful place, the more I believe it. Mrs. Fudge's kindergarten class began robotics last week with mentoring help from Mr. Rooklidge's high school robotics class. A good time was had by all. Sharyl Iblings, who serves the rural mail customers from Skamokawa and Grays River-Rosburg Post Offices, will be retiring March 31, 2018 after 28 years. She started as the relief carrier for Hermina Carroll in 1999 and was awarded the USPS Highway Contract Route (HCR) in 1999 when Hermina retired. The United States Postal Service Highway Contract Route (HCR) Division has awarded the fourth contract in the 82 year history of the “Skamokawa to Pillar Rock” contract route to Shelby Hoiland, a Cathlamet resident. The route consists of delivering the mail to the rural addresses originating from the Skamokawa and Grays-River Post Offices. NOT SO GREAT--I suppose it depended on where you were, but as this week began, Sunday was definitely on the wet side in West Valley. We did have our dry moments, but for the most part, it was damp. Good day everyone, just a few updates....... It has been a good year so far, we have had several events. In February we had an Appreciation Dinner for Wahkiakum County Law Enforcement, Firefighters and Emergency First Respondors. It was a great turnout. The Cathlamet Fire Department will hold an open house next Sunday, 2:30 p.m., to dedicate its new fire truck. Chief Vernon Barton said the public is invited, including men or women who might want to learn more about becoming volunteer fire fighters. With the spring turkey season set to begin April 15, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) urges prospective hunters to sign up now for hunter education courses to avoid missing out on any hunting opportunities in 2018. For the past few years our parade has boasted of having more Irish wolfhounds than the Seattle and Portland parades. This year Seattle had 14 wolfhounds, and we had 13 wolfies and one great Dane, so we’ll grudgingly concede a tie. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “Hook the Hawg” Salmon Derby on March 30 and March 31, at the Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet. This is a two-day event commencing at daylight on Friday, March 30, and finishing in the evening on Saturday, March 31. Turn in tickets with weigh-in of the catch. Weigh-in times for both days will be 4-6 p.m. All salmon should be gilled and not gutted. Regulars to the Liberty Theatre in Astoria may notice an updated plaque in their lobby cookie stand. The plaque entitled, “Chez Jo” has been updated to honor longtime volunteer, donor, and Friend of the Liberty Jo Robinson. GORGEOUS--In spite of some cold nights, the sunshine that shone through my windows on Saturday and Sunday was certainly welcomed! It was even into the 60s, which was a far cry from those cold, wet, windy and nippy 30 and 40 degree temperatures we've been having lately.
