WET BEGINNING--It’s a tadbit soggy out there as I begin this column as one of our atmospheric rivers is making itself known. Of course, if you’ve been here awhile, it’s just known as a typical rainy stretch of weather and it’s not anything too special unless it dumps two or three inches of rain on us every day, so I’m hoping that doesn’t occur! However, we need to make preparations for when these extra wet days cause a bit of flooding over our roadways and the potential for slides, etc., are more apt to occur, so let’s hope we’ve all bee...
Photo of the week: Theo Burkhalter spent time with me last Saturday so I could interview him in depth about his life, his adoption process, and the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver where he lives five days a week. He comes home by bus to Kelso, then is picked up and brought home to be with his family over the weekend, then he catches the bus back to Vancouver on Sunday afternoons. Theo was born in China, then adopted from an orphanage by the Burkhalters. A friend of Susan's tol...

Wahkiakum Outdoors will host an educational presentation, “Wings over the Long Beach Peninsula” on Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m., with Madeline Kalbach, Ph.D. Southwest Washington (especially the Long Beach Peninsula area) has long been a bird-watching “hot spot” of the Pacific Northwest. Several raptors migrate across its coast and inland areas, including an occasional snowy owl. Birding locations and events on the...

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) shellfish managers have tentatively scheduled additional razor clam digging dates at Mocrocks and Copalis beaches in March. "After reopening harvest on Copalis and Mocrocks since late January, we are delighted to announce tentative digs at both beaches for the remainder of March," said Bryce Blumenthal, WDFW coastal shellfish biologist. "Marine toxin levels on Long Beach and Twin Harbors are still too high for reopening, but we're hopeful that digging will return to one or both of those beaches...

March is raining by. It's sure strange to have snow and hail and rain and wind, oh but wait...it's still winter, isn't it? Did lots of reading in past couple weeks. First a fairly new biography of Julia Butler Hansen that's top notch by John Hughes. Mayor David Olson showed it to me, so I borrowed it and got my own copy. I cannot understand why someone in Cathlamet isn't selling it. Since the Mayor is working hard on recognizing the importance of her life and her house, it would be nice to have...

STILL WINTER--If you live in my neck of the woods, you woke this past Sunday, Feb. 26, with no power and lots of snow on the ground. The snow was very pretty but as the “dusting” of predicted snow turned into several inches, my enjoyment started to wane just a bit. Couple that with trees falling down and taking out power lines, which affected many over Ingalls Road, West Valley Road and along SR 4 from the rock pit to KM, that was not exactly welcomed. A big “thank you” to PUD crews for coming out once again and fixing a mess along Ingalls...
Last Sunday I visited with the Building Committee for the Naselle Community Center. Those lovely and faithful folks are a joy to visit with. I talked with them about my history as a fundraiser/grantwriter/consultant with non-profits and gave them some of my experiences with both large and small organizations. I first came to Wahkiakum County in February of 2003 to offer a grantwriting class that turned out to be a good sized group. There are similarities among non-profits in our area, whether...
