  • Wilson bill clears way for inexpensive kit homes

    Feb 9, 2023

Washington lawmakers should clear the way for inexpensive kit homes as one solution to the state’s affordable-housing crisis, says Sen. Jeff Wilson, R-Longview. “A hundred years ago, people bought houses from the Sears catalog -- they came in a boxcar, you found a local crew to build them or you did it yourself,” Wilson said. “We see prewar kit bungalows standing proudly today in every community of the state. As prices of starter homes skyrocket, we ought to take another look at kit homes as a solution for today.” Wilson has introduce...

At the end of Welcome Slough, photographer Sarah Lawrence came across a lone river otter. "To my absolute delight, three more joined him and they spent a good five minutes checking me out before heading over to some logs . . . I couldn't believe it when all four got out of the water. They hissed a little so I stayed a safe distance . . . I can't believe after living here 15 years it's only in the last few months that I've started to see them locally." Photos by Sarah Lawrence...

  • Play Valentine Bingo at fairgrounds Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 2, 2023

COLD START--This week is beginning rather nippy, as this Sunday morning saw temps in the mid-20s and that’s plenty cold enough for me! The blue sky and sunshine that came along with it was very nice though, and truly made the thick, white frost sparkle like crazy; very pretty. I was even happier when it warmed up and we were back to seeing green grass, as were the animals. Here’s hoping everyone made it through these first few frozen days of February without any burst pipes or other problems that these cold streaks can cause! SPECIAL DAY...

Youth Camp News: A letter to DNR dated November 2022 was shared with me last week written by our State Senator and both State Representatives. We are confident a task force could find a positive solution which improves state services and utilizes the exceptional qualities of the now closed Naselle site. We are hopeful th...

Our first stop was at the Seattle Pacific University for a campus tour and lunch, then on to the Boeing Museum of Flight. • Crab and oyster feed in Rosburg this Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 26, 2023

BRR--As we woke up this past weekend, it was below freezing in West Valley and we even got to see a bit of snow and “graupel”; those tiny snowballs which I used to lump into the category of just hail. Anyway, it was cold and definitely not a time to be without an extra layer of clothing or bedding! Some areas along SR4 on Sunday morning had folks slipping and sliding and saying it was a “sheet of ice” as some folks even met with a trip to the ditch. It’s just a reminder that winter has just begun and we are a long ways from enjoying those war...

Sunday's Concert: It's a lovely Monday with fog lifting and sunshine coming through. A good day to smile and remember the wonderful concert yesterday at the packed Naselle Community Center with the Skamokawa Swamp Opera group. I was so happy to hear the Sheriff's Report song first thing and then the Sheriff's Report Volume Two at the end. Folks came from Raymond to the west and Puget Island to the east. The group sang for an hour with songs of Finland and the region, giving the audience a wonder...

Two Cathlamet-area women, Heather Passmore Odom and Sarah Lawrence, are appearing in "Calendar Girls," currently playing at Stageworks Northwest Theatre, 1433 Commerce Ave., Longview. The play is a fictionalized version of a true story from Yorkshire, England, where a group of mature women from the Women's Institute created a tastefully nude calendar to raise money for cancer research after the husband of one of the women died of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The 2000 calendar was a hit beyond their...

STORMY--As I begin this column, it’s blowing like crazy and I am just hoping I can finish this up without any power outages ruining my plans! During the night, it was definitely a time of noise as I could hear the tree branches crashing down in the woods behind me and I was hoping it would settle down before something landed where I didn’t want it to; so far, so good! It appears our weather is supposed to be a bit drier by the time you read this on Thursday, so that will be nice. On the flip side it will also be a bit colder, with temps in the...

My friends, I know the rain can get to us, but please remember to take your Vitamin D because it helps the body with what the sun normally gives us the rest of the year. Margie Godfrey from the old Naselle Clinic taught me that years ago and I’ve discovered it really helps. Remember that by mid-February, it’s usually possible to get out into the yard/garden so it’s just a month away. Wet is one thing, but warmth brings hope, at least to me. And rain beats several feet of snow every time. I’d rather wear a rain jacket than layers and boots t...
