COLD--I don’t know about you but these chilly days and cold nights are definitely not making these old bones very happy as they seem to ache with every move and I moan and groan with every one of them! I can remember ole Doc Fritz telling me that I needed to move to Arizona, and that was back in the early 60s. Maybe I should have listened! Anyway, we’ve had some snow and plenty of ice in the mornings, and often it doesn’t appear to be icy but that blacktop can fool you and before you know it, your rig is going sideways and sliding all over the...

Here's a Christmas story from Kayrene Gilbertsen: "For many years Puget Island was known as Little Norway. Christmas was our biggest Norwegian celebration of the year. Each family brought the traditions of their area and for weeks the women baked beautiful cookies in the irons they had brought from home; krumkake, fattigmond, sandbakkels, rosettes, goro and many more. Of course, lefse was our favorite. The men made the rullapulse as it had to be tightly rolled, tied, cooked and pressed. It was...

Submitted by Jessica Vik Wahkiakum 4-H Robotics Club Program Coordinator Networking is incredibly important. This is some advice shared with students during the WHS/4-H Career Talk from Dr. Zachary Randell, Ph.D., and Megan Williams, M.S., who work for the Seattle Aquarium's Conservation Programs & Partnerships Department. They spent the school day in person sharing their story with rotating groups of students from 4th -12 grade at the Cathlamet Pool. Networking is what brought them to...
By Dave Hicks and Garrett Phillips By some measures, Wahkiakum County’s flood risk is minor, with less development, fewer people, and fewer flood insurance claims than other counties in the state. Also, there have been no recorded deaths or injuries caused by flooding, and flooding is not an existential threat to the community as a whole. We can look at other measures that tell a different story. For example, 28% of Wahkiakum County’s critical infrastructure is located in floodplains, and a recent State of Washington Flood Risk Analysis ide...
by Maude Kimball Butler, (1880-1963) Edited by Karen Bertroch As I read accounts of the pioneer Christmas celebrations it occurs to me that the observances depended on the locality and the backgrounds of the settlers. For that reason, it may be interesting to know how we celebrated the day of days in an isolated spot in Southwestern Washington. The few settlers included ex-employees of the Hudson's Bay Company, New Englanders, Irish, Californians, and Mid-westerners. In 1882, my parents, both...
WHAT WILL WE GET?--As this week begins, the forecast is a mixed bag, with some saying we could get some snow and some saying it’s just going to freeze, while others are saying rain every day, so I guess we will just have to wait and see what shows up. As we all know, the weather can vary around here from Skamokawa to Cathlamet and even from valley to valley and day to day, so it’s just best to be prepared for the worst scenario and then hope for the best, as it’s much easier to deal with the worst if we’re ready for it. I’m not a lover of...

There’s a another way to pay a Stanley’s Sanitary Service bill, thanks to a new online billing option which became available in October. “It’s been a few years in the making,” Holly McKay-Beach said. “We were finally able to get it started.” Check the bottom of the bill for the web address and a 12 digit number which will be used to set up an account. The account allows customers to receive bills by email, pay a bill, set up auto pay, and send messages to Stanley’s. It also allows Stanley...

Submitted by Nick Nikkila With only 23 days left until Christmas Eve, the speed of life tends to accelerate this time of year. As a result, one has to pick and choose which Christmas season events to attend. One set of events that is a “must see” and should be high on everyone’s list is the Naselle Finnish-American Folk Festival Christmas Concert, the Tour of Homes and the Soup Supper occurring on December 4. The three events are a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas Season. The concert will take place in the Naselle Community Center locat...

BRR--We have certainly had some chilly temperatures in West Valley this past week and I can say with all certainty that I’m not at all fond of those mid-20 degree temps we were having, as that’s just too cold for me! Plus, what happened to our fall? It seems we went from hot and dry to frigid and miserable without any cooler but dry and pleasant days! However, the weather folks say it’s going to warm up this week but it doesn’t come with any dry weather, but plenty of rain instead, so we won’t be dealing with icy roads anymore but we will be h...
