It looks like we have had our summer and we did indeed reach the 100 degree mark last Saturday. The marquee at the Naselle School actually said so, and lots of photos were taken of it. It’s nice to see the Wahkiakum County Fair banner hanging across SR 4 once again! This is an indication that our fair is just a few weeks away. The heavy wooden sign has also been hung over the main entrance admission gate to welcome everyone as they walk into our fair. WET--As this work week begins, it's a little more than damp outside in the morning hours, and not exactly the summer type weather we were wishing we'd have by this time of year. We do seem to be getting some breaks by afternoon though, so the day isn't totally a wash! We have many painting projects to finish before fair time and received some excellent help from The Farmers 4-H Club last week! Shawn Deal, the rabbit and cavy superintendent and Deb Gribskov, poultry superintendent, brought their 4-H club to the fairgrounds twice last week. Their first project was to paint the picnic tables with blue, lavender and pink paint. Library hours to change July 23 In an effort to balance the budget and also accommodate customer needs, effective July 23 the Blanche Bradley Memorial Library will be closed Mondays. Opening hours on Wednesdays will shift from 6-7:30 p.m. to 1-4 p.m. The new schedule is Tuesday and Friday 2-5 p.m. and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 1-4 p.m. Hours will be reevaluated in 2013 when the library remodel is complete. How did you enjoy the thunder and lightning show last Friday night? It was great until we were awakened by our dogs barking and growling and raising a loud commotion. When we got up, we found an extra dog in the living room on our couch and he wasn’t about to leave with all the noise outside. It turned out to be our neighbor’s, Al and Nancy George's dog Butch, the brother of our older male dog. He doesn’t like these noisy nights, so went looking for a place to hide. GOT SUMMER--Everyone was happy to see the sun come out last week. It almost got a bit warm for me, but hey, it was nice to have dry for a change. An Evening of Spoken Word set for Deep River Pacific Northwest folk poet Gary Anderson and essayist Nick Nikkila will present An Evening of Spoken Word this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Deep River Legion Hall. Anderson published My Finnish Soul in 2010. His latest book, Bunchgrass and Buttercups-The Deep River Suite, was published in 2012. The horse arena will be closed to open riding July 13-15. The Horsemanship Challenge Event will be held on July 14 followed by 4-H Horse Camp. The second Horsemanship Challenge Series event begins at 9 a.m. on July 14 at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds Arena. The break down for the age groups is Junior: 3rd – 5th grade, Intermediate: 6th – 8th grade, Senior: 9th - 12th grade and Adult: 19 years and up. The cost is $25 to run through the events. I guess it’s time to get back to work and the real world after an absolutely wonderful week with family and folks we consider to be a part of our family. We had the pleasure of housing all six of our kids and their spouses or significant other, all of our grandchildren and a great-grandson. Altogether we had about 54 people and 12 dogs in our little tent city. The weather cleared up nicely after the first night of showers and the rest of the time it was beautiful. There is a big project in progress currently at the fairgrounds; we are rebuilding the pig, sheep and goat stalls. There were 24 stalls to rebuild, most of the wood needed to be replaced and all new doors built. Each year we don’t know how many pigs, sheep or goats are coming to our Fair until after animal entry day on July 25. All the stalls will be strong enough to hold any combination of these animal exhibits. We have built 18 stalls in the last two weeks, then we had to install an underground drainage pipe which is attached to the arena g...
Seniors vouchers available for local Farmers' Market Wahkiakum seniors will have the opportunity to receive Senior Farmers' Market Vouchers this year at a distribution held at the Two Island Farmer’s Market, located at 59 W. GREAT ENDING--Last Friday was nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures. It was so nice, it was almost a shock to the system. Kiwanis recycle for children's hospital The Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet is beginning a recycling program in support of Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital. A recycling bin has been placed next to the Lions Club newspaper recycling bin at J.C. Thomas Middle School. Acceptable items include any aluminum items and Oregon recyclable plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles or items with an “OR” in the recyclable code area. BRIEFLY WARMER--As this week began, we'd warmed up a bit from the wet and windy spell we had at the end of last week, so that's been nice. But by Tuesday morning, all was soaking wet again.
