We enjoyed a busy successful fund raising weekend at the fairgrounds. With two events going on at the same time we attracted horse riders to our rummage sale and rummage sale shoppers to our horse event! Where, oh where, is our summer? Rain, rain and more rain. I certainly hope it dries out soon so that the hay makers can get their fields mowed and baled. If the grass grows any higher we will be calling out the sheriff to go into the fields to find the tractors and their drivers. As least that’s how tall it is in our fields. What a great week-end for the Dollars for Scholars events! With rain showers all week and a pretty wet day on Friday we were all very happy when the sun came out and continued to shine all Saturday afternoon. Spectators enjoyed a beautiful assortment of cars and trucks at the Rods and Reels Rod Run Show. Many bright colored flashy cars, a few high performance fast cars, plus a large group of antique cars and trucks were lined up in the fairgrounds park. SO-SO--The big Memorial weekend has come to an end and while it wasn't a total bust for weather, it could have been better. While some were enjoying sunshine on Saturday, most of us here in Skamokawa were stuck in sea fog and windy conditions, which meant it was a bit nippy, especially for those on the beach. Basketball boot camp registration now open Registration is in progress for Spoonie’s Boys Basketball Boot Camp. The camp will be held July 23 to July 28 with Game Night on July 28 at Thomas Middle School’s gym. The public is welcome to attend. The camp is open to players entering grades six through 12. Is anyone else being swarmed with hummingbirds? I have never seen so many at the same time. My feeders have to be refilled daily and sometimes there are two birds eating at the same time on each of the little flowers for a total of six birds on each feeder. They are amazing little creatures. My cats are just about crazy looking at them through the window, especially when a bird will hover on the other side of the glass where the cat’s staring. BIG CHANGE--Just as we were getting used to those sunny, dry days, the rains came back and have really put a damper on all those outdoor projects. The Fairground's west side of the arena new drainage system has experienced the first big downpour of rain since we installed the big pipe underground. I am happy to report there is no standing water in sight! To finish the arena drainage project we still needed to do some ground leveling in the arena area. SO-SO--Last weekend promised to bring some sunshine to our area but after a brief amount on Saturday morning, the clouds took over and it was rather gloomy all day. Runners gear up for 28th Great White Tail Run The 28th annual Great White Tail Run takes place on May 19 on the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge in Skamokawa at 10 a.m. The courses are 10k, 5k and 2 miles in length, with award recognition for overall female and male winners in each event. Our new bleachers were delivered last week to the Fairgrounds. We expected them to arrive on a flat-bed truck so we could use equipment to unload them, but they arrived in an enclosed van-trailer. That changed our unloading plans! We unloaded by hand several tons of aluminum bleacher parts. Looking at their building plans, I am reminded of an erector set that we once bought my son, only this is way bigger!
