GETTING BETTER-- As I began this column, the weather wasn't so great but by the evening hours, it dried up and it wasn't too bad. However, the forecasters are predicting some very nice weather for this week, with a real toasty day on Tuesday, but nice throughout the week, so by the time the Fourth of July rolls around it should be just right for barbecues, fireworks and all the holiday doings. Wow, Fair is here. I hope everyone will come out and see all the changes we’ve made at the fairgrounds. The cow barn has been painted inside thanks to Kelly. All the tables and benches have been painted by Janelle. That was a lot of painting, and it looks great. Thank you to both of you. The Fair Foundation painted the youth building floor. WOW! Fair is here next week. We start taking entries on Monday. On Sunday we will be putting on the final touches to the fairgrounds. Anyone wishing to help, please call the office for times. Wow what a great turn out for the clean up day at the fairgrounds. I had around 35 volunteers and four fair board members. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their time. Happy 4th of July from the fair. The Fairboard is still looking for fair royalty. The program has changed back to its old way of the Queen/King being chosen on the amount of money they earn. The leftover sale items will be donated to the Mule Wrestling team for their sale this weekend. The Fair Board is still looking for young ladies and gentlemen to run for Fair Royalty. A noisy delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange Hall last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner is the Fair Board’s biggest fundraising event each year. A hard working group of volunteers planned and staffed this big event and did a fantastic job! Just two days until February 9. On this special day we will be preparing the Valentine Diamond Dinner for our guests. There’s still time to get your tickets. Tickets are only $25 per dinner and the dinner starts at 6 p.m. We have three nice prizes for our raffle drawing. My project for the Wahkiakum County Fair this week was shifting through a big pile of paperwork. It is time to turn in the application for state funding for our fair. Every exhibitor that participated in our 2012 Fair is counted and all exhibitor entries per class are added up. The Wahkiakum County Fair is only seven months away! Fair Board committees are starting to meet and discuss new ideas to help promote, fundraise for and advertise our Fair. The Royalty Program committee met last week to look over a new program. The rules, responsibilities and funds raised are all topics that are being looked into. The new program is still in a rough draft form, the committee is pooling ideas and as soon as we have a detailed program we look forward to advertising for participants. The volunteer positions for the Wahkiakum County Fair Board have been filled! We welcome to the board Kathy Durrah and Jason Rainey. We have a full board again and lots of fundraising to do this year! In February we host a Valentine Dinner, March is Easter Bingo time and for April I am preparing the paper work to schedule a Centered Riding Clinic. We have in our approved Wahkiakum County Fair budget for 2013, $13,500 to pay out to adult and youth exhibitors. Adults will be receiving the same dollar per point as youth exhibitors again. The premium point payment has been reinstated in our budget for Adults, spread the word! With the above good news circulating around our community, a question was asked; “How about purchasing ribbons for the adult exhibitors instead of using stickers?” To buy these ribbons we will need to ask for donations from our community, as we didn’t plan the extra...
Working outside in this cold weather isn’t much fun, yet wintertime projects at the Fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our projects is to fix all the little problems some of our buildings have acquired over the years. The horse barn gutters had come loose, sending rain water cascading down the siding and the resulting pools of water were flowing into some horse stalls. The bright colored lights decorating the fairgrounds and Skamokawa Grange Hall were beautiful, the free holiday dinner was delicious and the huge crowd of people attending had a great time. Volunteers working on the drainage project between the horse barn and arena, in spite of the weather, are making some good progress. One ditch was dug, four catch basins set in place and 100 feet of four inch pipe laid out. The pipes and basins are connected, most of the ditch is filled back in and the pipe that is in place is helping to drain the inches of rain we keep receiving each day.
