It is strange when your cancer doctor tells you that your cancer has conquered your body and you have what may be days to live. That's where I am. It's a slow moving lymphoma, and I've been under treatment since September, 2001. It has now attacked my bone marrow and I'm not producing platelets and hemoglobin. We established a treatment regimen that should keep me going long enough to take care of last minute business and get set up at home to die. That leaves us with the future of this newspaper. There's been a team working on a potential sale...

  • Commissioners discuss issues large and small

    Ian Brandon|Apr 27, 2023

Commissioners met in their regular Tuesday meeting to discuss issues large and small. In the public comment portion of the meeting a local resident expressed concern over the grant process that is funding an emergency source of water for island residents. The commenter felt that they neglected to assist West end residents when their water system was in trouble. Another citizen asked commissioners if there was anything they could do about trash at the wildlife refuge. The board members could not decide between two applicants to the Lower...

  • We still export oil and inflation is going down

    Apr 27, 2023

To The Eagle: It was very pleasing to read letters on the 20th. Two people with differing opinions liked each other in person! I have said (written) so many times, if we sat down with a cup of coffee or a beer and spoke honestly, we would agree on most things, with few minor differences, like which side of the bed you prefer. Sadly, the other, on cancel culture by the right, is history repeating. Then Toni’s MAGA promotion is so full of inaccuracies and false facts (alternative facts), that I’ll pretend it wasn’t there. Now that the FOX bullh...

  • April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

    Apr 27, 2023

To The Eagle: "Midnight Caller": Terrified and out of breath from running, the slight figure ducked into a dark alley, to catche their breath. Fumbling for the crumpled scrap of paper, they found the hotline number that had been hurriedly ripped from the flyer, in a public restroom. A few weeks ago, fear had ended the call before it was completed. This time the number was punched-in and with trembling fingers, the "send" button was pushed, before the caller could change their mind, at 12:03 a.m., it was now or never. The situation had finally,...

  • Let kids be kids until they can mature

    Apr 27, 2023

To The Eagle: Nice letter last week, Paul. I imagine we're on the same page here with my week's rant. I fail to understand how the issue of sexual identity is even an issue with teenagers. Why would there even be the need for laws in regard to sexual surgery to ‘correct' what God in His infinite wisdom has made a child to be? Unless a person is born a true hermaphrodite why would surgery even be considered? Even then it would seem prudent to allow the child to grow to the age of maturity and let them decide if they wanted ‘corrective' surgery....

  • Pillow talk at the PCA

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 27, 2023

The Pioneer Community Association's Bottoms Up campaign to soften seating in the old church pews is gaining ground with 55 cushions turned in so far. They would love to see even more. Participants seem to be enjoying the creative challenge, whether they are new to sewing or have more sophisticated skills. One person even wove by hand the fabric that encases her pillow, with colors reminiscent of the building's stained glass windows. Each cushion tells a story about the person who donated it,...

As I’m writing this on Sunday evening, it’s coming down in buckets; enough already! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 27-May 3 are Ricky Montgomery, Eva Snow, Carol Danker, Anita Hoven, Carrie Backman, Jenna Engle, Darrin Olsen, Con...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Apr 27, 2023

Maury Mooers called last week from Skamokawa. It was wonderful hearing his stories and his memories of the Maki family who lived there. Mrs. Maki from Fairview Road also called to say she doesn't believe they are relatives of the old Herman Maki family. What an honor to talk to them about their lives and history. Soon I hope to talk with the Naselle/GRV Valedictorian and Salutatorian as I did last year about their futures. Meeting the seniors and hearing their dreams and plans gives me energy....

  • Community supports robotics club car wash

    Apr 27, 2023

Submitted by Ron Wright Last Saturday your Mecha Mules Robotics Club (and friends) hosted a carwash fundraiser at The Bank of the Pacific in Cathlamet. We had three goals: to make a good start on raising enough money to pay for our trip back to the Seaperch Internationals in Maryland this May, to begin preparing for next season, and to give back to our community. We achieved all three, plus one more that was obvious to the folks watching the kids and coaches work on their cars. As one commenter...

  • A senior's day in Olympia

    Karen Bertroch|Apr 27, 2023

Eight seniors and two teachers, Rob Dalton and Haleigh See, recently visited Olympia, so I thought it would be fun to talk with one of the seniors to learn what it meant to them. Delaney Kragerud was happy to meet with me at the school. Of Norwegian ancestry, she has the beautiful Scandinavian skin, so after complimenting her for a minute or two, we got down to talking about the field trip. The group was there for a day and spent time admiring the beautiful building where the legislature meets...

  • Mules Baseball

    Apr 27, 2023

On Wednesday, the Wahkiakum Mules baseball team hosted the Toledo Riverhawks and lost 12-1. “Our youth and inexperience showed against a very tough Toledo team,” Coach Garrett Radcliffe said. “Unfortunately, they jumped on us early and never quite looked back. We did manage to get some runners on and bases loaded scenarios against their ace. We just struggled to get the big, timely hit to cash in on it all.” Thursday’s game against Toledo was postponed till Friday, and a lack of umpires meant a last minute decision to move the game to Castle...
