Wahkiakum County's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5297 will be distributing Buddy Poppies on Main Street on May 25 and 26. The Division II Washington State Court of Appeals on May 10 overturned the exceptional sentence of Andrue V. Riley and has remanded the case for new disposition before a different judge. Riley had pled guilty to vehicular homicide and related charges stemming from a 2006 traffic accident in which he was driving while intoxicated. A companion died, and another suffered severe injuries. Valerie Elliott Antijunti from Selah has made and donated a quilt to be raffled off to help raise funds for the fairgrounds. She is a native of Pillar Rock and her family comes to the Wahkiakum County Fair every year to exhibit. Antijunti said she was very concerned when she heard about the flood damage at the county fairgrounds in Skamokawa and volunteered to make a quilt to raise funds to help repair and replace the goat and sheep pens, horse stalls and fixtures for the 4-H youth building. Wahkiakum PUD is taking steps to increase its system protections, Manager Dave Tramblie reported Tuesday at the PUD board of directors meeting. Tramblie said he has asked consultants Brown and Kaiser to start a long-range plan for improved system protection. “At the Cathlamet end, we’re in pretty good shape,” he said. The good news is that the project to construct a new, expanded ramp for the Puget Island ferry landing is on track for this winter, Wahkiakum County Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported Tuesday. The bad news is that the cost of a temporary ramp to keep the ferry running during construction is going to be much higher than anticipated, close to $400,000 or more, Ringen said. The Lower Columbia Economic Development Council received a grant in the amount of $12,500 from The Wahkiakum Community Foundation that will help the Council with staffing and administration needs. Wahkiakum County commissioners voted last Thursday to cut some county services and hold an advisory election on future operation of the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic.
